Yes, one should have been initiated either in Panchadashi or Shodashi to perform navavarana puja.

While cooking rice or cleaning of some herbs which will be used in medicines will be cleaned twice or thrice. In the same manner, while meditating for every set, one has to follow this procedure which we are earlier following. If you are doing meditation for one hour, you can split into three or four sets per session or according to your convenience and you can observe the difference.K. Janardhan

In nirvikalpa samadhi, we lose our body consciousness, but stay connected with Cosmic Consciousness. Realization happens in this stage of samadhi, but we will not be aware at the time of realization. This realization will happen in a split second. Once we comeback to our normal consciousness, we become a different person. Our perception would have transformed and we will look at the world through the eyes of Shiva.
