My grandfather( paternal side) passed away on 30th September2016. Is it mandatory to eat veg for 14days since I stay abroad its very difficult to follow such rites.plz advise

Generally this is not done at home. Best thing would be to light normal lamp with ghee during navaratri.

Yes, you can either keep an idol or a photo or both. Keep a small plate in front of idol/photo and offer archana there.
