This is a Vedic mantra (Yajur Veda I.viii.6.6; it is also available in Rig Veda) and any wording of Veda should not be changed. This is my personal opinion.

There is four secret bijas to be added to get Lord Shiva Darshan"if one goes to lake manosarovar and goes neck deep, does japaof the mrytunjaya mantram with the four secret bijas about 1000 times then lordshiva appears before the sadhak granting them his darshan plus longevity. Almostall the people I know who go to kailash do this sadhana and has NEVER failed.!This is found in Rudramala there is the patala of lord mrityunjaya(need to be confirmed Ravi please)OM GLAUM HUM KLIM KRIM (some texts say it are extra bijas but, these additionalbijas make the mantra too powerful and without a guru these do harm so I did notplace them, overall this mantra is a darshan matra mantra rather a icchasampurna mantra with those bijas this japa would grant anything)TAT SAVITUR VARENYAMTRYAMBAKAM YAJAMAHE SUGANDHI PUSHTIVARDHANAMURrVARrUKMIVA BANDHANAAN MRrTYUR MOKSHAYA MAAMRITAAT

Do we say "bandhanān or bandhanāth" and bandhanāth as say by some gurus gives instant benefit when recited in critical illness conditions?

There is no specification about the number of recitations etc. Since it is a Vedic mantra, it should be able to give positive results. If he is nearby to you, probably you can have some water in a small non-iron pot; mix cardamom, sandal, saffron, etc and place the water pot before you. Chant this mantra and if possible, place your right palm over the vessel while reciting. May be three recitation should suffice per day. Sprinkle few drops of this water on him. Your friend should be alright at the earliest. If you are not able to use water for any reason, as you said rightly, visualize him and pass on the benefits of this mantra to him. Visualizing is him is an advanced version of saṁkalpa.

With regard to Shodashi, every part should be aligned with either inhalation or exhalation. Part 2 should not be mixed with part 1, though part 2 is short. What you have mentioned here is not Mrit Sanjivani mantra. This mantra consists of five verses from Rig Veda. I have just uploaded the mantra in the discussion forum. For curing ailments this is the best mantra.
