For this kind of mantras, generally number of recitations are not prescribed, as they are Vedic mantras. Probably, one time in the morning and one time in the evening should suffice.

This is a Vedic mantra (Yajur Veda I.viii.6.6; it is also available in Rig Veda) and any wording of Veda should not be changed. This is my personal opinion.

There is four secret bijas to be added to get Lord Shiva Darshan"if one goes to lake manosarovar and goes neck deep, does japaof the mrytunjaya mantram with the four secret bijas about 1000 times then lordshiva appears before the sadhak granting them his darshan plus longevity.
