1. Viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) -
asyaśrī nāgeśvara mahāmantrasya ।
amṛtākarṣaṇa dakṣiṇāmūrti ṛṣiḥ ।
gāyatrī chandaḥ ।
śrīnāgeśvaro devatā ।

mama bhagavatanugraha siddhyarthe śrī-guror-anujñāyā mahāmantra jape viniyogaḥ ॥
अस्यश्री नागेश्वर महामन्त्रस्य ।
अमृताकर्षण दक्षिणामूर्ति ऋषिः ।
गायत्री छन्दः ।
श्रीनागेश्वरो देवता ।
स्वाँ बीजं ।
ह्रीँ शक्तिः ।
क्लीँ कीलकं ।
मम भगवतनुग्रह सिद्ध्यर्थे श्रीगुरोरनुज्ञाया महामन्त्र जपे विनियोगः ॥
Meaning - This prayer/mantra japa is to invoke Śrī Nāgeśvara in our heart, perform mantra japa to obtain His complete grace in all aspects, including the four puruṣārthas – dharma (following own nature), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) and all desires that one may seek from the Divine. The sage who visually saw this mantra (ṛṣiḥ) is Śrī Amṛtākarṣaṇa Dakṣiṇāmūrti. The meter (chandas) for the mantra is Gāyatrī of twenty-four syllables and its variations. The deity is Śrī Nāgeśvara, the seed (bījaṃ) is svām̐, the power (śakti) is hrīm̐. The key (kīlaka) that binds the mantra is klīm̐. By the grace and command of our guru and the guru lineage, we pledge to undertake the mantra japa in full earnest.

Touch both the feet with the right ring finger and thumb joined together. |

Touch the navel with the right ring finger and thumb joined together. |

Use both the thumbs and run them on both the little fingers. |

om̐ ṇam̐ - karatalakarapruṣṭābhyāṃ phaṭ । |
ॐ णँ - करतलकरप्रुष्टाभ्यां फट् । |
Open both the palms; run the opened palms of the right hand on the front and back sides of the left palm and repeat the same for the other palm. |

इति कर न्यासः ॥ |
Thus ends the six-part Kara nyāsa. |
4. Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsaḥ (षडाङ्गन्यासः) -

Cross both the hands and touch both shoulders with the palms. |

om̐ īm̐ - netratrayāya vauṣaṭ । |
ॐ ईँ - नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् । |
Touch the eyes with the right index and ring fingers, with the middle finger touching the ājña cakra. |

om̐ ṇam̐ - astrāya phaṭ । |
ॐ णँ - अस्त्राय फट् । |
Open up the left palm and strike it three times with index and middle fingers of the right hand. |
7 |
iti ṣaḍaṅga nyāsaḥ ॥ |
इति षडङ्ग न्यासः ॥ |
Thus ends the six-part Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsa. |
bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digbandhaḥ ॥
भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्बन्धः ॥
Meaning: May the directions be charmed and bound, to prevent any external obstacles from the powers residing in the triads – the Earth, atmosphere and the heavens.
5. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -
saptabhogam śubhravarṇam satyasandham bhayaṅkaram ।
śāntipriyam sadānandam dvijihvam tīkṣṇadaṃṣṭraṇam ॥
sarvābhīṣṭa pradātāram jagadrakṣaṇa tatparam ।
nityānnadāna samtuṣṭam subrahmaṇyam namāmyaham ॥
सप्तभोगम् शुभ्रवर्णम् सत्यसन्धम् भयङ्करम् ।
शान्तिप्रियम् सदानन्दम् द्विजिह्वम् तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रणम् ॥
सर्वाभीष्ट प्रदातारम् जगद्रक्षण तत्परम् ।
नित्यान्नदान सम्तुष्टम् सुब्रह्मण्यम् नमाम्यहम् ॥
Meaning: Salutations to Lord Subrahmaṇya, the One who is also the seven hooded serpent king Śrī Nāgeśvara, possessing a crystal-like transparent appearance. He looks frightful but is extremely benevolent, peace loving, always happy and never failing in aiding His sincere devotees. He is double tongued with extremely sharp teeth. He fulfills all the wishes of His sincere devotees and is always present to save the worlds from extreme dangers. He is fully satiated by the offerings of food made by His devotees to the needy.

ram̐ vahnyātmane dīpam kalpayāmi namaḥ । |
रँ वह्न्यात्मने दीपम् कल्पयामि नमः । |
Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the middle fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs. |

vam̐ amṛtātmane naivedyam kalpayāmi namaḥ । |
वँ अमृतात्मने नैवेद्यम् कल्पयामि नमः । |
Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the ring fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs. |

sam̐ sarvātmane karpūramiśrita tāmbūlādi sarvopacārān kalpayāmi namaḥ । |
सँ सर्वात्मने कर्पूरमिश्रित ताम्बूलादि सर्वोपचारान् कल्पयामि नमः । |
Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position. |

Thus ends the Pañcapūjā. |
7. Mantraḥ (मन्त्रः) -
om̐ śrīm̐ hrīm̐ klīm̐ aim̐ īm̐ ṇam̐ svām̐ śaravaṇa bhavāya (dehi me tanayam) svāhā ॥
ॐ श्रीँ ह्रीँ क्लीँ ऐँ ईँ णँ स्वाँ शरवण भवाय (देहि मे तनयम्) स्वाहा ॥
The 17 lettered Śrī Nāgeśvara/Subrahmaṇya/Kārtikeya mantra should be recited at least 108 times. Initiation is essential.
Meaning -
This is a seventeen syllabled mantra with some syllables representing bīja (seed) mantras. The parts of the main mantra including the bījas are described below. –
- The bīja (seed) mantra om̐ (ॐ) consists of – ‘au’ => healing and deep cleansing, ‘m̐’ => removes misery. Ushers in auspiciousness.
- The bīja (seed) mantra śrīm̐ (श्रीँ) consists of – ‘śa’ indicates Mahālakṣmī, repha ‘ra’ indicates dhana or wealth, ‘ī’ indicates tuṣṭi or satisfaction, ‘m̐’ denotes nāda indicating parā or śakti and vindu indicates duḥkhahara or removal of all miseries.
- The bīja (seed) mantra hrīm̐ (ह्रीँ) consists of – ‘h’ => Brahman/śiva, ‘r’ => fire and drive within us, ‘ī’ => energy and the source of all power that helps us ascend, ‘m̐’ => removal of all miseries and facilitator of self-realization and ultimate liberation.
- The bīja (seed) mantra klīm̐ (क्लीँ) consists of – ‘ka’ is for Kāmadeva or Kṛṣṇa, indicating all our wishes, aspirations and desires, ‘la’ for indra indicating victory in all undertakings, ‘ī’ for tuṣṭi, meaning fulfillment and contentment, ‘m̐’ for sukha, meaning enjoyment as well as removal of all miseries and facilitation of self-realization and ultimate liberation.
- The Aiśvarya mātṛkā and Sarasvatī bīja aim̐ (ऐँ), represents and bestows immense knowledge, mastery in arts and amazing creativity.
- The Kāmakalā bīja (seed) mantra īm̐ (ईँ) represents the union of Śiva and Śakti, the static and dynamic states of the super-consciousness. It leads us directly to self-realization and ultimate liberation. It is also the Īśāni devi bīja signifying the richness of divine perfection and is also the Turiyā bīja.
- The Ṇārnā Devi Mātṛkā bīja (seed) mantra ṇam̐ (णँ) signifies granting of all magical siddhis as well as spiritual enlightenment.
- The Candra (Moon) bīja (seed) mantra svām̐ (स्वाँ) signifies a strong mind, removal of all mental afflictions and an immensely strong drive to achieve the desired results.
- The words “śaravaṇa bhavāya (शरवण भवाय)” denote the “One who has emerged from the vibrations of the stars.” The reference is particular to the Kṛttikā constellation (Pleidus asterism). The Kṛttikā nakṣatrā is associated with the six mothers - Śiva denoting auspiciousness, Sambhūti denoting growth and increase, Prīti denoting love and caring, Sannati denoting obedience and humility, Anasūya denoting freedom from malice, envy and negativity and Kṣamā denoting forgiveness and pardon. Lord Kārtikeya has emerged from the care of these mothers and has imbibed all these qualities within Himself.
- The Vahnisundarī bīja (seed) mantra svāhā (स्वाहा) represents complete submission and surrender to the Divine.
- The words in parentheses are a Prayoga (experiment) used for obtaining children. The words “dehi me tanayam (देहि मे तनयम्)” literally mean “please grant us progeny”. The prayoga may be used after duly completing the puraścaraṇa of the mantra.
Salutations to the highly revered Divine in the form of Śrī Dakṣiṇāmūrti (form of Lord Śiva Himself) to He bestow upon us prudence, wisdom and spiritual knowledge and lead us towards liberation from the binding of the mundane!
He grants spiritual knowledge and transforms us completely and makes us realize that we are none other than the blemish-less and pure super-consciousness known as Brahman.

11. Samarpaṇam (समर्पणम्) –
guhyādi guhya goptvātvam gṛhaṇāsmat kṛtaṃ japaṃ ।
siddhirbhavatu me deva tvat prasadān mayī sthirā ॥
गुह्यादि गुह्य गोप्त्वात्वम् गृहणास्मत् कृतं जपं ।
सिद्धिर्भवतु मे देव त्वत् प्रसदान् मयी स्थिरा ॥
Meaning: O Lord, you are the most hidden secret of all secrets. May these mantra japa counts performed by me, be offered to you in totality. Our prayers and hope, are that your grace shall remain with us always.
