Navagraha pīḍāhara stotram (नवग्रहपीडाहरस्तोत्रम्)

Prologue –

                The Navagrahas or the nine heavenly bodies that have the most significant and profound effects on our lives are the primary source of misery faced by us. Their transit or placement in unfavorable combinations or houses of our birth chart, results in the manifestation of harmful effects and miserable conditions faced by us. This stotram is deployed to pray to these graha Lords and seek their immense grace in erasing the malevolent effects and bestowing happiness and contentment in our lives. Daily recitation of this stotram is recommended to prevent any major disasters and to overcome all difficulties caused by the grahas.

sindūrāruṇa raktāṅgaḥ karṇāntāyata locanaḥ ।

sahasrakiraṇaḥ śrīmān saptāśvakṛtavāhanaḥ ॥ 1 ॥

सिन्दूरारुण रक्ताङ्गः कर्णान्तायत लोचनः ।

सहस्रकिरणः श्रीमान् सप्ताश्वकृतवाहनः ॥ १ ॥

Salutations to Lord Sūrya who is saffron red in complexion with extended ears with a very wide eye gaze. He emits countless rays of light and rides a carriage driven by seven horses.

                The fiery red complexion denotes the intense heat of the sun which emits light all over the solar system and further. The wide ears denote the solar flares and the gaze of the sun is all through our solar system and beyond. The seven horses denote the VIBGYOR colors of the sunlight when refracted through a prism. These are the same colors appearing on a rainbow.

gabhastimālī bhagavān-śivapūjā-parāyaṇaḥ ।

karotu me mahāśāntiṃ grahapīḍāṃ vyapohatu ॥ 2 ॥

गभस्तिमाली भगवान्शिवपूजापरायणः ।

करोतु मे महाशान्तिं ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ॥ २ ॥

Salutations to Lord Sūrya the power behind the Sun and sunlight, who is an ardent devotee of Lord Śiva (Rudra) performing His rituals with great devotion and fervor. O Lord, please grant us peace and tranquility and remove the malefic effects caused by the placement and transit of Sun in our birth charts and also grant us robust wealth and vigor to live our lives to the fullest. We thank and bow to you in deep reverence.

jagadāpyāyanakaro hyamṛtādhāra-śītalaḥ ।

somaḥ saumyena bhāvena grahapīḍāṃ vyapohatu ॥ 3 ॥

जगदाप्यायनकरो ह्यमृताधारशीतलः ।

सोमः सौम्येन भावेन ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ॥ ३ ॥

Salutations to Lord Candra, the One who supports the world and its denizens. He denotes the essence of the ambrosial cerebral nectar amṛta and is always in a cool and composed disposition. O Lord, you are favorably disposed towards everyone, may we plead upon you to please shower your grace upon us and remove all malefic effects caused by the placement and transit of Moon in our birth charts and grant us sound mental health and peace of mind. padmarāganibhā nenā dehenāpiṅgala-locanaḥ ।

(padmarāganibhāṅgena karipiṅgala-locanaḥ)

aṅgārakaḥ śivebhakto rudrārcana parāyaṇaḥ ॥ 4 ॥

पद्मरागनिभा नेना देहेनापिङ्गललोचनः ।

(पद्मरागनिभाङ्गेन करिपिङ्गललोचनः)

अङ्गारकः शिवेभक्तो रुद्रार्चन परायणः ॥ ४ ॥

O Lord Maṅgala, you are ruby red in complexion and radiance with tawny brown eyes. You are forever immersed in prayers to Lord Śiva (Rudra) and are a great devotee of His.

rudra-sadbhāva-sampanno rudra-dhyānaika-manasaḥ

grahapīḍā bhayaṃ sarvaṃ vināśayatu me sadā ॥ 5 ॥

रुद्रसद्भावसम्पन्नो रुद्रध्यानैकमनसः

ग्रहपीडा भयं सर्वं विनाशयतु मे सदा ॥ ५ ॥

O Lord, you are filled with the grace of Lord Rudra and are always immersed in deep contemplation of Lord Rudra and filled with His essence. O Lord, please free us from all fears and miseries caused by the misplacement and transit of the planet Mars in our birth charts. Please destroy all inimical influences and grant us courage, wealth, health and peace of mind by your immaculate grace. We thank and bow to you in deep reverence.

kuṅkumaccha-videhena cārudyutkarataḥ sadā ।

śivabhakto budhaḥ śrīmān grahapīḍāṃ vyapohatu ॥ 6 ॥

कुङ्कुमच्छविदेहेन चारुद्युत्करतः सदा ।

शिवभक्तो बुधः श्रीमान् ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ॥ ६ ॥

O Lord Budha, you always appear bright red in form and are extremely delightful to look at. You are an ardent devotee of Lord Śiva (Rudra) and are the bestower of great wealth and happiness. O Lord, please rid us of all miseries and malefic effects of the placement and transit of planet Mercury in our birth charts and grant us immediate relief. We pray to you ardently with sincerity and devotion and seek your immense grace. We thank and bow to you in deep reverence.

dhātu cāmīkaracchāyaḥ sarva-jñāna-kṛtālayaḥ ।

(tapta cāmīkaracchāyaḥ)

bṛhaspatiḥ sadākālam-īśānārcana-tatparaḥ ॥ 7 ॥

धातु चामीकरच्छायः सर्वज्ञानकृतालयः ।

(तप्त चामीकरच्छायः)

बृहस्पतिः सदाकालमीशानार्चनतत्परः ॥ ७ ॥

O Lord Bṛhaspati, you are of golden yellow complexion and radiance reflected by the planet Jupiter (guru graha). You are the embodiment of all knowledge and wisdom and are always immersed in the worship of Lord Īśāna (Rudra).

so'pi me śānta-cittena parameṇa samāhitaḥ ।

grahapīḍāṃ vinirjitya karotu vijayaṃ sadā ॥ 8 ॥

सोऽपि मे शान्तचित्तेन परमेण समाहितः ।

ग्रहपीडां विनिर्जित्य करोतु विजयं सदा ॥ ८ ॥

O Lord Bṛhaspati, you are always disposed in a composed and balanced demeanor and bear the true spirit of the Supreme Lord. Please shower your abundant grace upon us and remove all the miseries caused by the unfavorable transits and placements of the planet Jupier in our birth charts. Please grant us victory in all our endeavors and usher in auspiciousness all around. We thank and bow to you in deep reverence.

himakundendu-tulyābhaḥ suradaityendra-pūjitaḥ ।

śukraḥ śivārcanarato grahapīḍāṃ vyapohatu ॥ 9 ॥

हिमकुन्देन्दुतुल्याभः सुरदैत्येन्द्रपूजितः ।

शुक्रः शिवार्चनरतो ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ॥ ९ ॥

O Lord Śukra, you are fair in complexion and bear dazzling white radiance reflected by the planet Venus. You are ardently worshiped by the Lord of the celestial Suras-devas Indra, as well by their cousins the Asuras-daityas. You are an ardent devotee of Lord Śiva (Rudra) and worship Him at all times. O Lord, may you shower your immaculate grace upon us and free us from all miseries and hardships caused by the malevolent placement and transits of the planet Venus in our birth charts. May your grace be upon us and may we be granted luxurious comforts, conveyances and immense riches and opulence. We thank and bow to you in deep reverence.

bhinnāñjanacayacchāyaḥ saraktanayanadyutiḥ ।

śanaiścaraḥ śivebhakto grahapīḍāṃ vyapohatu ॥ 10 ॥

भिन्नाञ्जनचयच्छायः सरक्तनयनद्युतिः ।

शनैश्चरः शिवेभक्तो ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ॥ १० ॥

O Lord Śani, you appear very dark in complexion resembling a broken black highlighter applied on the eyebrows. You are the shadow reflection of the Sun as the son of Lord Sūrya and Chāya. Your eyes are shining red and lend an extremely fearful appearance to you. O Lord Śanaiścara, you are an ardent devotee of Lord Śiva (Rudra) and have His complete grace upon you. O Lord, please shower your immense grace upon us and relieve us of all pain and discomfort caused by the placement and slow transit of Saturn in unfavorable houses of our birth charts. May your grace grant us much relief and help us maintain humility and righteousness (dharma). We thank and bow to you in deep reverence.

nīlāñjananibhaḥ śrīmān saihikeyo mahābalaḥ ।

śivapūjāparo rāhugrahapīḍā vyapohatu ॥ 11 ॥

नीलाञ्जननिभः श्रीमान् सैहिकेयो महाबलः ।

शिवपूजापरो राहुग्रहपीडा व्यपोहतु ॥ ११ ॥

O Lord Rāhu, you appear dazzling in a very dark complexion resembling a dark highlighter on the eye lashes. You are extolled as the bestower of sudden wealth and unimaginable opulence to your favored devotees. You are the son of the lion faced Siṃhikā and are extremely aggressive and very powerful. You are an ardent devotee of Lord Śiva (Rudra) incessantly engaged in His worship. O favored devotee of Lord Rudra, may you please have mercy and shower your grace upon us and remove all malevolent effects of your placement and transit through all the houses of our birth chart and grant us immense fame and opulence. We thank and bow to you in deep reverence.

dhūmrākāro grahaḥ keturaiśānyāṃ diśi saṃsthitaḥ ।

vartulo'tīva vistīrṇalocanaiśca vibhīṣaṇaḥ ॥ 12 ॥

धूम्राकारो ग्रहः केतुरैशान्यां दिशि संस्थितः ।

वर्तुलोऽतीव विस्तीर्णलोचनैश्च विभीषणः ॥ १२ ॥

O Lord Ketu, you are smoky gray in complexion and are placed in the North-Eastern Īśānya direction that is the favored location of Lord Rudra, of whom you are an ardent devotee and have earned His grace. You have a curved body and very large eyes casting a wide gaze upon the denizens of Earth. Your overall appearance is extremely fierce and so are your effects in transit and placement in the houses of our birth charts.

palāśadhūmrasaṅkāśo grahapīḍā'pakārakaḥ ।

ghoradaṃṣṭrākarālaśca karotu vijayaṃ mama ॥ 13 ॥

पलाशधूम्रसङ्काशो ग्रहपीडाऽपकारकः ।

घोरदंष्ट्राकरालश्च करोतु विजयं मम ॥ १३ ॥

O Lord Ketu, you appear dazzling with a smoky red radiance. You are most capable in halting the malefic effects caused by all grahas and protecting us. O Lord with monstrous teeth, make us victorious in all walks of life and bestow auspiciousness and fame on all fronts and help us accomplish worthy achievements by your wondrous grace!

khaḍgakheṭakahastaśca vareṇyo varadaḥ śubhaḥ ।

śivabhaktaścā'grajanmā grahapīḍāṃ vyapohatu ॥ 14 ॥

खड्गखेटकहस्तश्च वरेण्यो वरदः शुभः ।

शिवभक्तश्चाऽग्रजन्मा ग्रहपीडां व्यपोहतु ॥ १४ ॥

O Lord Ketu, you bear in your upper arms, a sword (khaḍga), a shield (kheṭaka) and display the vara and abhaya mudras in your lower arms. You are the most excellent among all grahas reflected in your immense grace and generosity in blessing your devotees. You are unmatched in your reverance and are the most ardent devotee of Lord Śiva (Rudra). You are the eldest and most excellent! O Lord, please bestow your benevolence and help us get rid of all miseries caused by the grahas and protect us at all times and lead us to the fulfillment of our material and spiritual desires.

ete grahā mahātmāno maheśārcanabhāvitāḥ ।

śāntiṃ kurvantu me hṛṣṭāḥ sadākālaṃ hitaiṣiṇaḥ ॥ 15 ॥

एते ग्रहा महात्मानो महेशार्चनभाविताः ।

शान्तिं कुर्वन्तु मे हृष्टाः सदाकालं हितैषिणः ॥ १५ ॥

May the most revered, extremely powerful and splendid nine grahas mentioned above, extolled for their adeptness at worshipping Lord Rudra and by means of which have earned His immense grace, come together at all times and grant us peace and tranquility and ensure its continuance at all times! May they always grant their choicest blessings in our favor and protect us at all times. May we offer our obeisances to these wondrous divinities and pray for their benevolence to persist on us at all times.

॥ iti navagrahapīḍāharastotraṃ sampūrṇam ॥

॥ इति नवग्रहपीडाहरस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ॥
