It is only the practice that is important. For example, in many houses, food is offered to birds such as crows before we eat food. But, animals are generally fed after we eat. It is all practice that we follow.

This chapter talks about selfless offerings to gods ,rishis,guests,needy and animals.They all are souls and God is omnipresent.But in "Will you come back Guruji",why was Shankara asked to give food to his dog outside the house and after having his meal.What kind of karmas are accrued if animals are given food before we eat.

For example, fire ritual during ancestral rites. This is to be done definitely. Optional fire rituals are like Chandi homa, Rudra homa, etc.

Many sacrifices are done on definite occasions. Some sacrifices are done with specific purposes. There is no definitive answer to this question. It all depends on occasions and purpose.
