In memory of – I dedicate this article in memory of our most beloved dog son Happy, who passed away as I completed the article. It may have been the Lord’s will that this be translated in Happy’s memory. May the Divine Lord Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava and Śrī Mahākāli accept him and place him on their laps.

Note - Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava, the consort of the Divine Mother Śrī Mahākāli, represents timelessness and is beyond all the known dimensions of space and time. He is beyond Time and is also confined within the dimensions of Time and space as Śrī Kāla Bhairava. He denotes the complete transformation of one’s fate.

1. Viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) -

अस्य महाकालो देवता मन्त्रस्य ।

दक्षिणकालिकायै ऋषिः ।

विराट् छन्दः ।

महाकाल देवता ।

हूँ बीजं ।

ह्रीँ शक्तिः ।

स्वाहा कीलकं ।

सर्वाभीष्ट सिद्ध्यर्थे श्री गुरोर् अनुज्ञाया महामन्त्र जपे विनियोगः ॥

Meaning - This prayer/mantra japa is to invoke ŚMahākāla in our heart, perform mantra japa to obtain His complete grace in all aspects, including the four puruṣārthasdharma (following own nature), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) and all desires that one may seek from the Divine. The sage who visually saw this mantra (ṛṣiḥ) is the Divine Mother Śrī Dakṣiṇakālikā. The meter (chandas) for the mantra is Virāṭ of forty syllables and its variations. The deity is Śrī Mahākāla, the seed (bījaṃ) is hūm̐, the power (śakti) is hrīm̐. The key (kīlaka) that binds the mantra is svāhā. By the grace and command of our guru and the guru lineage, we pledge to undertake the mantra japa in full earnest.

Touch the area of genitals with the right ring finger and thumb joined together.

ह्रीँ शक्तये नमः पादयोः  ।

Touch both the feet with the right ring finger and thumb joined together.

svāhā kīlakāya namaḥ nābhau।

स्वाहा कीलकाय नमः नाभौ।

Touch the navel with the right ring finger and thumb joined together.

sarvābhīṣṭa siddhyarthe śrī-guror-anujñayā mahāmantra jape viniyogāya namaḥ sarvāṅge ।

सर्वाभीष्ट सिद्ध्यर्थे श्रीगुरोरनुज्ञया महामन्त्र जपे विनियोगाय नमः सर्वाङ्गे ।

Run both the palms all over the body.

Open both the palms; run the opened palms of the right hand on the front and back sides of the left palm and repeat the same for the other palm.

Meaning: May the directions be charmed and bound, to prevent any external obstacles from the powers residing in the triads – the Earth, atmosphere and the heavens.

With the tattva mudra touch the genitals to awaken the sacral Svādhiṣṭhāṇa cakra by the grace of all accomplishing and auspiciousness bestowing Śrī Siddhalakṣmī, the consort of Lord Gaṇeśa.

ॐ वटुकनाथायै नमः (नाभौ) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the navel to awaken the navel Maṇipūraka cakra by the grace of the karma absorbing Lord Vaṭukanātha.

ॐ वटुकवल्लभायै नमः (हृदये) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the middle of the chest to awaken the heart Anāhata cakra by the grace of the consort of Lord Vaṭuka (the pious and fearless Umā Devī, the consort of Nīlakaṇṭha Rudra).

om̐ uḍyāṇa pīṭhāya namaḥ (kaṇṭhe)

ॐ उड्याण पीठाय नमः (कण्ठे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the throat to awaken the throat Viśuddhi cakra by the grace of the coveted Uḍyāṇa pīṭha located in the Swat Valley of Kashmir.

om̐ pradīpta-māṅgalāyai namaḥ (bhruvau)

ॐ प्रदीप्तमाङ्गलायै नमः (भ्रुवौ) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the location between the eyebrows to awaken the third-eye pineal gland Ājñā cakra, by the grace of our stimulated and awakened spiritual awareness associated with this cakra.

ॐ करवीराय नमः (ललाटे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the forehead to awaken the soma cakra to generate the cerebral fluid amṛta, generating bliss and joy.

ॐ क्षेत्रपालाय नमः (अलके) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the forehead near the hairline, to awaken the nāda-bindu cakra to experience the bliss of pure energy transforming to sound, by the grace of the Divine Protector Bhairava.

With the tattva mudra touch the top of the head activating the crown sahasrāra, by the grace of the Divine Mother Kāli, denoting complete transformation.

ॐ व्योमेश्वर्यम्बायै नमः (मूर्ध्नि) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the top of the head activating the crown sahasrāra, by the grace of the ethereal Divine Mother Vyomeśvaryambā, denoting interaction with the super-consciousness.

ॐ खेचर्यम्बायै नमः (ललाटे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the forehead to awaken the soma cakra, by the grace of the Divine Mother Khecaryambā, the One who takes the form of the individual consciousness within us. May She help generate the cerebral fluid amṛta, granting bliss and joy.

ॐ दिक्चर्यम्बायै नमः (भ्रूमध्ये) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the location between the eyebrows to awaken the third-eye pineal gland Ājñā cakra, by the grace of the Divine Mother Dikcaryambā, who awakens the sensory perceptions of the individual sentient being.

With the tattva mudra touch the middle of the chest to awaken the heart Anāhata cakra by the grace of the inner sense (antaḥkaraṇa) awakening Divine Mother Gocaryambā.

ॐ खगमूर्तिकायै नमः (लिङ्गे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the genitals to awaken the sacral Svādhiṣṭhāṇa cakra by the grace of the Divine Mother Khagamūrtikā, the One who shapes and forms the heavenly bodies and constitutes them.

With the tattva mudra touch the forehead to awaken the soma cakra, by the grace of the Divine Mother Māheśvarī, the One who conceals our true identity. May She help generate the cerebral fluid amṛta, granting bliss and joy.

ॐ कौमार्यै नमः (कण्ठे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the throat to awaken the throat Viśuddhi cakra by the grace of the Divine Mother Kaumārī, the great Protectress.

om̐ vaiṣṇavyai namaḥ (hṛdaye)

ॐ वैष्णव्यै नमः (हृदये) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the middle of the chest to awaken the heart Anāhata cakra by the grace of the Divine Mother Vaiṣṇavī, the Sustainer.

ॐ वाराह्यै नमः (नाभौ) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the navel to awaken the navel Maṇipūraka cakra by the grace of the Divine Mother Vārāhī, who connects us to the Earth and its bounty.

ॐ ऐन्द्रायै नमः (लिङ्गे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the genitals to awaken the sacral Svādhiṣṭhāṇa cakra by the grace of the Divine Mother Aindrī/Indrāṇī, the bestower of all types of authority, fame and riches.

ॐ चामुण्डायै नमः (मूलाधारे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the perineum area to awaken the root Mūlādhāra cakra by the grace of the Divine Mother Cāmuṇḍā, the Protector of our honor and dignity.

ॐ महालक्ष्म्यायै नमः (सर्वाङ्गे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the rest of the body and may the grace of the Divine Mother Mahālakṣmī, bestow all types of prosperity upon us.

With the tattva mudra touch the top of the head activating the crown sahasrāra, by the grace of the Divine Father Manthāna Bhairavāya, the churner of the cosmic ocean of super-consciousness.

ॐ षट्चक्रभैरवाय नमः (ललाटे) ।

ॐ फट्कारभैरवाय नमः (कण्ठे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the throat to awaken the throat Viśuddhi cakra by the grace of the Divine Father Phaṭkāra-bhairava, the great Protecter and dispeller of all evil influences.

With the tattva mudra touch the navel to awaken the navel Maṇipūraka cakra by the grace of the Divine Father Vīreśa Bhairava, who protects us from all types of dangers and major disasters, mishaps and exigencies.

With the tattva mudra touch the genitals to awaken the sacral Svādhiṣṭhāṇa cakra by the grace of the Divine Father Śrīmantreśvara Bhairava, the protector of all mantras and siddhis.

ॐ हंसगर्भ भैरवाय नमः (मूलाधारे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the perineum area to awaken the root Mūlādhāra cakra by the grace of the Divine Father Haṃsagarbha Bhairava, the Protector of all secrets and higher spiritual states of evolution.

om̐ caṇḍikeśvara bhairavāya namaḥ (sarvāṅge)

ॐ चण्डिकेश्वर भैरवाय नमः (सर्वाङ्गे) ।

With the tattva mudra touch the rest of the body and may the grace of the Divine Father Caṇḍikeśvara Bhairava, keep away all the inimical forces away from us and protect us at all times.

7.Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -

koṭikālānalābhāsaṃ caturbhujaṃ trilocanam

śmaśānāṣṭaka madhyasthaṃ muṇḍāṣṭaka vibhūṣitam

pañcapretasthitaṃ devaṃ triśulaṃ ḍamaruṃ tathā

khaḍgaṃ ca kharparaṃ caiva vāma dakṣiṇa yogata

vibhrataṃ sundaraṃ dehaṃ śmaśānabhasma bhūṣitam

nānāśavaḥ krīḍamānaṃ kālikāṃ hṛdayasthitam

lālayantaṃ ratāsakta ghoracumbana tatparam

gṛdhragomāyusaṃyuktaṃ pheravīgaṇa saṃyutam

jaṭāpaṭala śobhāḍhyaṃ sarvaśūnyālaya sthitam

sarvaśūnyaṃ muṇḍabhūṣaṃ prasanna-vadanaṃ śivam

कोटिकालानलाभासं चतुर्भुजं त्रिलोचनम् ।

श्मशानाष्टक मध्यस्थं मुण्डाष्टक विभूषितम् ॥

पञ्चप्रेतस्थितं देवं त्रिशुलं डमरुं तथा ।

खड्गं च खर्परं चैव वाम दक्षिण योगतः ॥

विभ्रतं सुन्दरं देहं श्मशानभस्म भूषितम् ।

नानाशवः क्रीडमानं कालिकां हृदयस्थितम् ॥

लालयन्तं रतासक्तं घोरचुम्बन तत्परम् ।

गृध्रगोमायुसंयुक्तं फेरवीगण संयुतम् ॥

जटापटल शोभाढ्यं सर्वशून्यालय स्थितम् ।

सर्वशून्यं मुण्डभूषं प्रसन्नवदनं शिवं ॥

Meaning: Salutations to Lord Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava, who appears with the resplendence of the dissolution causing zillion dark flaming fires. He has four arms and is three-eyed. He is in the midst of the eight crematory grounds wearing a garland of eight skulls represented by the eight attendants called Muṇḍāṣṭakas. He is seated atop five corpses called the pañcapretas, denoting the acts of Creation, Preservation, Destruction, Concealment and Revelation. He holds in His four arms, a trident, a drum, a sword and an empty skull. He appears with a beautiful well-formed body, adorned with ashes from the crematory grounds. He plays around with corpses and is the beloved of His consort Mahākāli. They are highly gratified and appear coddling each other passionately engaging in amorous activities. They are in the midst of loudly shrieking vultures and howling jackals. He shines forth prominently with very thick braided hair on the top of His head and in totality represents the absence of the entire Creation – nothingness or śūnya. He is Śiva, the formless pure consciousness devoid of all afflictions, representing the singular reality perceived as the great Void.

The severed head represents the removal of ego, the cup denotes an empty mind ready to accept the Divine teachings. The trident represents the piercing of all the triads and their dissolution. The drum denotes the sound vibrations of the mātṛkā śaktis across the entire Creation. The braided hair represents the stacked super-consciousness containing the nectar of bliss - amṛta. The three eyes represent spiritual awakening, the perception of the beyond and awakening to a Higher purpose.

The pañcapretas, denote the acts of Creation (Brahma), Preservation (Viṣṇu), Destruction (Rudra), Concealment (Īśvara) and Revelation (Sadāśiva). The Divine Father Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava representing Time and Timelessness is beyond these five acts and presides over them with His consort Śrī Mahākālī. The pretas and the cremation grounds clearly signify that the Divine exists beyond the cycle of life and death and is eternal.

The eight cremation grounds (śmaśāna) given in the Saṃvarodaya-tantra (17.36-45) denote the following -

  1. Caṇḍogra (east) – Cremation of impetuousness, rash, brazen, aggressive and uncouth behavior.
  2. Gahvara (north) – Cremation of the tendency to be buried and lost in thoughts and all types of inaction.
  3. Karaṅkala or Jvālākula (west) - Cremation of bone-headed and stupid behavior, as well as tendencies pointing towards servitude and dependency.
  4. Subhīṣaṇa (south) – Cremation of extreme fright and fears holding us back in our progress.
  5. Aṭṭaṭṭahāsa (north-east) – Cremation of all extremities such as uncontrolled laughter, silliness and ridicul
  6. Lakṣmīvana (south-east) Dissolution of all material obsessions and attachments as well as all desires, material or spiritual.
  7. Ghorāndhakāra (south-west) – Cremation of all tendencies leading us to loneliness, depression and detachment.
  8. Kilakilārava (north-west) – Removal of all emotional outbursts, bursts of joy and excitement as well as sadness.

The Muṇḍāṣṭakas represent the Eight Time keepers who adorn the neck of the Divine Lord Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava –

  1. Agnijihva – The fire emitting or sharp-tongued guardian who burns away all attachments.
  2. Pralamba - The lunging guardian who looms forward to grab the individual consciousness.
  3. Vidyādhipa - The guardian who disseminates all the knowledge leading to enlightenment.
  4. Viśeśvara - The guardian Lord of the entire Universe who governs its functioning.
  5. Sumukha - The most pleasing One who attracts everyon
  6. Mahāmuṇḍa – The One who is stripped of all attachments.
  7. Mahodara - The all-consuming one and also the guardian of all secrets surrounding the Creation and Time.
  8. Pinākin - The One who pierces through all dimensions.

वँ अमृतात्मने नैवेद्यम् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the ring fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

sam̐ sarvātmane karpūramiśrita tāmbūlādi sarvopacārān kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

सँ सर्वात्मने कर्पूरमिश्रित ताम्बूलादि सर्वोपचारान् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position.

9.Mūlamantraḥ (मूलमन्त्रः) -

hūm̐ hūm̐ mahākāla prasīda prasīda hrīm̐ hrīm̐ svāhā

हूँ हूँ महाकाल प्रसीद प्रसीद ह्रीँ ह्रीँ स्वाहा

The 16 lettered Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava mantra should be recited at least 108 times. Initiation is essential.

Meaning -

This is a sixteen syllabled mantra with some syllables representing bīja (seed) mantras. The parts of the main mantra including the bījas are described below. –

  1. The bīja hūm̐ (हूँ) consists of - h = Brahman/śiva, ū = expansion of power and excellence, m̐ = remove misery. The bīja is repeated twice for emphasizing on the need to completely remove all remaining miseries. It is also to emphasize its application across all dualities impacting the material and spiritual progress of the sādhaka. The dual usage of the bīja also denotes the Divine Eminences of Śrī Mahākāla and Śrī Mahākālī and the dissolution of all dyads.
  2. The word mahākāla (महाकाल) denotes the Divine Father Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava, the controller of Fate, time and timelessness, verily the Great Void (Mahāśūnya) itself!
  3. The words prasīda prasīda (प्रसीद प्रसीद) denote the request to the Divine Eminences Śrī Mahākāla and Śrī Mahākālī to be pleased with our efforts in invoking their grace and mercy to relieve us of all difficulties and change our fate in an instant.
  4. The Śrī Bhuvaneśvarī bīja (seed) mantra hrīm̐ (ह्रीँ) consists of – ‘h’ => Brahman/śiva, ‘r’ => fire and drive within us, ‘ī’ => energy and the source of all power that helps us ascend, ‘m̐ => removal of all miseries and facilitator of self-realization and ultimate liberation. The dual invocation of the bīja, is to pierce through all dyads and invoke the grace of the Divine Eminences Śrī Mahākāla and Śrī Mahākālī in all aspects of our progress – both material and spiritual.
  5. The Vahnisundarī bīja (seed) mantra “svāhā (स्वाहा)” represents complete submission and surrender to the Divine.

Salutations to the highly revered Divine in the form of Śrī Mahākāla Bhairava (form of Lord Śiva Himself) who completely changes our fate in an instant! The One who represents Time and Timelessness has the power to change our fate by His Divine grace and that of His consort Śrī Mahākāla Bhairavī.

He grants both material and spiritual wealth. Together they bestow the essential spiritual knowledge and awakening, to transform us completely and make us realize that we are none other than the blemish-less and pure super-consciousness known as Brahman.

प्रसीद - कवचाय हुं ।

Cross both the hands and touch both shoulders with the palms.

hrīm̐ hrīm̐ - netratrayāya vauṣaṭ ।

ह्रीँ ह्रीँ - नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् ।

Touch the eyes with the right index and ring fingers, with the middle finger touching the ājña cakra.

svāhā - astrāya phaṭ ।

स्वाहा - अस्त्राय फट् ।

Open up the left palm and strike it three times with index and middle fingers of the right hand.

iti ṣaḍaṅga nyāsaḥ

इति षडङ्ग न्यासः ॥

Thus ends the six-part Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsa.

bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digvimokaḥ

भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्विमोकः

Meaning: May the directions get unlocked to allow ourselves to experience the grace from all the triads of the three realms.

11. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -

koṭikālānalābhāsaṃ caturbhujaṃ trilocanam

śmaśānāṣṭaka madhyasthaṃ muṇḍāṣṭaka vibhūṣitam

pañcapretasthitaṃ devaṃ triśulaṃ ḍamaruṃ tathā

khaḍgaṃ ca kharparaṃ caiva vāma dakṣiṇa yogataḥ

vibhrataṃ sundaraṃ dehaṃ śmaśānabhasma bhūṣitam

nānāśavaḥ krīḍamānaṃ kālikāṃ hṛdayasthitam

lālayantaṃ ratāsaktaṃ ghoracumbana tatparam

gṛdhragomāyusaṃyuktaṃ pheravīgaṇa saṃyutam

jaṭāpaṭala śobhāḍhyaṃ sarvaśūnyālaya sthitam

sarvaśūnyaṃ muṇḍabhūṣaṃ prasanna-vadanaṃ śivam

कोटिकालानलाभासं चतुर्भुजं त्रिलोचनम् ।

श्मशानाष्टक मध्यस्थं मुण्डाष्टक विभूषितम् ॥

पञ्चप्रेतस्थितं देवं त्रिशुलं डमरुं तथा ।

खड्गं च खर्परं चैव वाम दक्षिण योगतः ॥

विभ्रतं सुन्दरं देहं श्मशानभस्म भूषितम् ।

नानाशवः क्रीडमानं कालिकां हृदयस्थितम् ॥

लालयन्तं रतासक्तं घोरचुम्बन तत्परम् ।

गृध्रगोमायुसंयुक्तं फेरवीगण संयुतम् ॥

जटापटल शोभाढ्यं सर्वशून्यालय स्थितम् ।

सर्वशून्यं मुण्डभूषं प्रसन्नवदनं शिवं ॥

siddhirbhavatu me deva tvat prasadān mayī sthirā

गुह्यादि गुह्य गोप्त्वात्वम् गृहणास्मत् कृतं जपं ।

सिद्धिर्भवतु मे देव त्वत् प्रसदान् मयी स्थिरा

Meaning: O Lord, you are the most hidden secret of all secrets. May these mantra japa counts performed by me, be offered to you in totality. Our prayers and hope, are that your grace shall remain with us always.
