Guruji, Kindly guide me. I have few queries related this Sadhana. 1) I heard that Matangi / Sumukhi devi prefer polluted places for worship, nd they accept partial eaten foods as offering. Is it true ? Can I worship in Pooja room or do I need to find polluted place for doing Sumukhi Devi Sadhana ? 2) Specific Dress(Colour) , direction for doing this Sadhana ? 3) Which time is best for doing Sumukhi Devi Sadhana (Morning / Afternoon / Evening / Night) 4) What are the materials I need to offer in fire ritual / homa.. Kindly reply and Guide me , Guruji Thankyou

Unless you have been specifically guided to take up this sādhana, I would not suggest venturing further. The guru who may have guided you can offer more suggestions. You may also lookup Mantra Mahodadhi for more guidance related to this mantra. Answering your questions regardless - 1) The pollution is in our thoughts and deeds and we accept Her guidance and offer our reverence even without fully conditioning our minds. As a symbolic gesture, you may offer half eaten food as an offering, keeping the relevance in mind. 2) Red should be best. 3) Evening times are best. 4) Clarified butter (ghee), red flowers (Kusuma).

English Translation - First take the mantra from the Guru tradition from the left path, then give the leftover and half-eaten food as a sacrificial offering to the Goddess and without any doubt chanting the mantra will provide results. The viniyoga and nyāsā can be done initially, following which, only Meditation and mantra are to be chanted through the rituals of Pañcamakara. This mantra is very rare and so are the disciples of this mantra in our country. Therefore, without becoming foolish, first seek your Guru. Find out from the guru, his Guru lineage and tradition/kula and the associated Āmnāyas etc., listen to their pronunciation of Sanskrit and chanting of mantras etc. If the right Guru is not found, then leave the guru and continue to search for the right Guru. Continue to offer prayers to the Goddess for guidance. If you are on the right path and your efforts are earnest and have been a seeker in your previous birth, then you will get shelter of the right guru and right deity. Google or TV guru and chanting or initiation of such mantras will do nothing good but only hell will be awaiting you - Yours Truly, Shyamanand.

Thank you for your guidance and suggestions sir. A point to note, is that it is generally NOT suggested to give up on nyāsā-s irrespective of whether we follow the Vāmācāra or Kaulācāra. It is relevant for all Āmnāyas and Ācārās.

The comment above is a big rant describing the harm and misfortunes one can encounter following the procedures mentioned here. The person indicates that I am not a guru and the article was lifted from Mantra Mahodadhi. He further claims knowledge from 50 related scriptures. Also, he states that one who knows the proper procedures taken from a qualified guru alone can obtain success in this mantra. While I do agree with almost everything stated in the comment, including my own ineptitude and incompetency to advice on sādhanās, I do wish to submit that I have had remarkable success related to the Divine Mother Sumukhi, Mātaṅgī and to some extent in Śrī Vidya. I however do not claim any expertise whatsoever. Comprehending the infinite is simply impossible! There are claims and counter claims on whether the Vedic method called as Dakṣiṇācāra followed in most of South India is effective or whether the more tantric Kaulācāra method should be followed, especially with Pañcamakaras? In my own personal experience of following both these methods, especially for this particular mantra, I can unequivocally state that NONE of them yield any benefits, until one has fully comprehended the inner meaning and the true purpose of the Divine Manifestation of Sumukhi devi as Ucchiṣṭa Cāṇḍālini. I have had the good fortune of being in the midst of gurus following various traditions and methods, but I must state that I have learnt more about the proper procedures of mantra sādhana by the grace of Shri Ravi Guruji and Shri Krishna ji of Bangalore, who both follow the Vedic method. The Kaula gurus have simply initiated me into the mantras and stressed upon their continual repetition in large numbers, rather than explain the intricacies of their meaning, the secrets and logic behind the procedures etc. My advice to those who cannot find a proper guru, is to read the tantras and the mantra books such as Mantra Mahodadhi, Śāradā Tilakam, Kulārṇava Tantram and various others related to mantra japa. A true guru is one, who strides like an elephant and ignores the bark of dozens of dogs in its periphery. Our own consciousness will recognize when we encounter such a guru, who selflessly initiates, displays great humility and takes us to the higher levels of consciousness.

Here on this site, knowledge is given without any discrimination. Our great fortune only takes us to the Divine Mother's various form's worship. Guiding medium can be a Guru, words of true knowledge in verbal or text form. Only The Divine Mother & Lord Shiva decides, who is capable of following their teachings, since most of Mantra, Yantra, Tantra Shashtra are in form of a discourse between them in form of question & answers. We as a human too are seeking answers from them. If an interpretation, guidance, by a learned Guru like Ravi sir, Krishna ji, can guide some of us, then we are quite fortunate. I thank them for their selfless service for the seekers. If The Divine Mother wants you to worship her, any path will lead you to Her only. There is no need to terrorise others by the claims of harm may happen to one's family if they follow knowledge imparted here. Our mind is hungry for content. If we feed it with spiritual texts then what is wrong?

I landed on this page recently. I have a question. Is Sumukhi Devi same as Laghu Shyamala Devi ? Or are they fundamentally different aspects? I see that both their mantras contain the term “Ucchista Chandalini” in it. Hence my doubt. Thanks sir.

They are different aspects of Mātaṅgī devi, although the mantras are very close and appear as variants of Sumukhi devi. They can be seen as different aspects of Sumukhi devi also.

Thanks Krishnaji. In the Daskshinachara marga, what would be acceptable Naivedya foods and Bali items for Sumukhi Devi? Do we also need to do yantra/avarana poojas ?

For every major deity such as Sumukhi Devi, we must perform the relevant Āvaraṇa pūja and recite the associated stotras, kavacas etc. Any Bali offerings can be made, if you are not following the tantric specifications. Generally red flowers mixed with clarified butter (ghee) may be used for Havan. Bali can be with red rice made of beetroot etc. Although we may offer various foods, the Divine Mother actually accepts our karma and shower Her blessings.

Another interesting fact is that Sumukhi Devi is also one of the consorts of Sri Kartikkeya ( DhurtaSwaami) in Agni Purana. Wonder if this is a different amsam than the consort Ucchista Chandalini of Ucchista Ganapati.

A very ancient temple (Shakti Peeth) of Mother Matangi is located in Bodh Gaya across the Phalgu river according to Pranatoshini Tantra. This seems to have been a well-known place of sadhana for Matangi devotees in the first millennium. The story goes that Matanga Rishi meditated here and gained grace. I have located this temple to be at the google location below. It is very small, and ancient, and not very popular. It is opposite the Mahabodhi temple across the Falgu River. Have any of the devotees here visited the place? Would love to hear your thoughts. https://goo.gl/maps/AtGURupMFpF8QrLV7

Greetings, and thank you very much for sharing this knowledge. I feel it’s very important that more is shared about Matangi, because the information on her that is publicly available is not very common. I have actually read that Her individual Tantras are very secret and have not yet been revealed by the sadhakas who have them. If you have any more information, please share. Knowledge like this is so incredibly valuable.

Soma, you are welcome. I learnt a lot about Goddess Matangi from articles on this site published by Krishnaji and Raviji. She is the most mysterious and least understood of all the dasamahavidyas. She is kind of fusion of Urga nature of Kali and Soumya nature of Lalita Tripurasundari. I found Matangi Sahasranama from the Nandyavarta Tantra describe many of her esoteric aspects, and was enlightening as well. She is most tolerant of her devotees and does not care for purity or procedure. All that is needed is pure devotion and faith. Shyamala Dandakam, of Kalidasa is a great Poem that details his account of direct encounter with the Goddess. The name sadāmadā ( from the Shyamala Sodasanama article by Krishnaji) captures the essence of her ever present highly intoxicated spiritual state. There is also an entire chapter devoted to her in Phetkarni tantra.

Wonderful comment! I think it would be great if we could make a discussion group dedicated to Matangi, so that we can compile and share information about Her. Do you have an email address that we could use for correspondence?

I am sure this mantra does not have pranava at the beginning and the correct form of it is: ucchiṣṭacānḍālini sumukhi devi mahāpiśācini hrīm̐ ṭhaḥ ṭhaḥ ṭhaḥ ॥

Thank you so much for publishing this. I dug into Muktabodha, and found the 6th patala of Phekkarini. Yes, it seems to be the same mantra, but no nyasa required there it seems. Or is it a polite way in samdhya bhasa to tell that not the ordinary nyasa is required?
