1. Dhyānam

Meditate upon the Divine Mother Pratyaṅgirā devi and merge in Her at the heart cakra.

ūrdhvaṃ kapālaṃ ḍamaruṃ triśūlaṃ saṃbibhratī baddha kalāvataṃsaṃ

piṅgordhva kauśī sītabhīmadaṃṣṭrā bhūyā dvibhūtyai mamabhadrakālī

Meditate on the Divine Mother Bhadrakāli Pratyaṅgirā devi, holding a cup, skull, a drum and a trident with loosened hair and dark complexion. She a wide gaping mouth and extremely terrific in form.

  1. Kalaśa sthāpana (कलश स्थापन) –

Kalaśa is a water vessel of great importance in pūja and meant to represent the entire universe within it. In the context of Śrī Pratyaṅgirā Devi, we establish the various pātra-s (vessels) by following the below procedures –

  1. Samānārghya (समानार्घ्य)

Meditate on Śrī Pratyaṅgirā Devi, perform Her upacāra-s (offering bath, dress, food, lights, fragrance etc.) mentally, perform a few recitations of Her root mūla mantra and also meditate upon the meaning and significance of the Kāmakalā bīja īm̐.

om̐ hūm̐ hrīm̐ klīm̐ aim̐ viparītapratyaṅgirāyai svāhā

[* we will use this as the Devi mantra for the rest of the document. It can be substituted with any other mūla mantra or any other mantra of Devi that the devotee has been initiated with.]

OR

om̐ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ pratyaṅgire mama rakṣa rakṣa mama śatrūn bhañjaya bhañjaya phrem̐ hum̐ phaṭ svāhā

OR

om̐ hrīm̐ kṣam̐ bhakṣa jvālā jihve karāla-daṃṣtre pratyaṅgire kṣam̐ hrīm̐ hum̐ phaṭ

To our left, create a śaṭkoṇa (hexagram) resembling the star-of-David with a bindu (dot) at the centre. Draw a circle outside the hexagram and a triangle within the hexagram. Also, draw a square enclosing the circle. To our right, create a triangle, a circle around it and a square encompassing the circle. Please a plank or any other support base for the Kalaśa. This plank is called an ādhāra (support). Now invoke the ādhāra śakti by meditating upon Her (om̐ ādhāra śaktibhyo namaḥ) and invoke the bīja a and place the water vessel (conch) upon the plank, once again invoking the ‘hṛn’ mantra for purifying the water contained in the vessel. Add some Ganges water if available, place sandal paste and red unguent (kuṃkuṃ) reciting the praṇava mantra ‘om̐’. One can also worship the Sun, Moon, Fire deities and other kalās (phases of the moon), show the dhenu mudra, recite any Śrī Pratyaṅgirā Devi mantra, to establish the Kalaśa and make it a general arghya (ablution) vessel, which is also termed as samānārghya (conch shell designated for this purpose). Take some water from the conch using an uddharaṇi (which is like a spoon with a deeper trough to hold more water) and transfer to a small container for use in the following procedures.

[The ‘hṛn’ mantra consists of the letters - ‘h’ meaning sun or the solar energy or light. It also refers to ākāśa or ether. It is indicative of the life sustaining breath or prāṇa. The letter ‘ṛ’ meaning good virtues and ‘n’ indicating revelation of our true identity].

The following mantra can be invoked to please the powers of all the holy rivers –

gaṅge ca yamune caiva godāvarī sarasvati narmade sindhu kāveri jalesmin sannidhiṃ kuru

  1. Viśeṣa Śrī Kalaśa (विशेष श्री कलश) –

Once the samānārghya is established, sprinkle water on the left and follow the below procedures –

  1. Reciting the “ophaṭ (ॐ फट्)” mantra, purify the Kalaśa.
  2. Place the and recite the below mantra –

om̐ śrī viparīta parabrahma mahā-pratyaṅgirāyai namaḥ śrī pātram sthāpayāmi

  1. Now recite the following viloma mātṛkā mantra after invoking the Devi to establish Herself at the centre, with Her mūla mantra –

om̐ hūm̐ hrīm̐ klīm̐ aim̐ viparītapratyaṅgirāyai svāhā

om̐ kṣam̐ ham̐ ḻam̐ sam̐ ṣam̐ śam̐ vam̐ lam̐ ram̐ yam̐ mam̐ bham̐ bam̐ pham̐ pam̐ nam̐ dham̐ dam̐ tham̐ tam̐ ṇam̐ ḍham̐ ḍam̐ ṭham̐ ṭam̐ ñam̐ jham̐ jam̐ cham̐ cam̐ ṅam̐ gham̐ gam̐ kham̐ kam̐ aḥ am̐ aum̐ om̐ aim̐ em̐ ḹm̐ ḷm̐ ṝm̐ ṛm̐ ūm̐ um̐ īm̐ im̐ ām̐ am̐ namaḥ

  1. Pour water inside the Śrī kalaśa reciting the ‘hṛn’ mantra, adorn with silk clothes around the vessel, flowers etc. Now recite the following mantras -

om̐ yam̐ namaḥ (May all impurities dry up (saṃśoṣaṇa) with the assistance of this mantra).

om̐ ram̐ namaḥ (May all impurities get burnt to ashes (dahana) with the assistance of this mantra).

om̐ vam̐ namaḥ (May all impurities get washed away (samplāvana) with the assistance of this mantra).

om̐ namaḥ (May the vessel become purified by this mārjana process).

The Viśeṣa Śrī kalaśa can now be placed on another ādhāra. The yantra of the Divine Mother Śrī Pratyaṅgirā Devi, described in this article, can now be placed inside this vessel for further worship.

The ether (ākāśa), part of the five principal elements, is represented by h”, this bīja also represents Lord Śiva, signifying purity, bliss and super-consciousness. The bīja “srepresents the Divine Mother Śakti, who is the expansion, pulse or the vibration of the super-consciousness and the cause of the entire Creation, it’s Preservation and Destruction/Transformation and it’s repeat cycle. The bīja “kṣ”, signifies protection. This bīja is composed of two bījas “ksignifying cit śakti or pure consciousness and “”, signifying māyā śakti, which is the cosmic virtual reality surrounding the consciousness and giving it the impression that it’s an independent being and also providing the cognitive faculties to recognize the Creation around it and fully masking the Absolute Truth, that it is none other than the pure super-consciousness Itself and not the body or mind! The bīja “m”, signifies the individual soul or consciousness (jīva), that has the intrinsic quest to realize the Divine by acquiring the ultimate knowledge that can lead towards self-realization and ultimate liberation and is also the means for its salvation. The bīja “la”, signifies the Earth (pṛthvī) element providing the support for sustenance and the grounding of one’s ego. The bīja “va”, signifies the water (jala) element, essential for sustenance of the entire Creation. The bīja “ra”, signifies the fire (agni) element, which provides the illumination and heat that is essential for survival. The bīja “yūm̐”, represents the nivṛtti bīja, signifying rest or repose of the mind on the soul (ātma), without any inhibitions and thoughts. The bīja “yūm̐”, also consists of the bīja-s “y” and “ūm̐”. The bīja “y”, signifies the air (vāyu) element and is the essential breath (prāṇa) that is required for survival. The bīja “ūm̐”, signifies the mātṛkā devi ūrdhvakeśī, signifying excellence and greatness and also the power of expulsion of all attachments and inhibitions, to unite with the Divine.

This above combined bīja, conveys the devolution of the super-consciousness through its pulsation to the individual consciousness, the manifestation of the entire Creation together with the five principal natural elements required for the Sustenance and Destruction/Transformation. It also seeds the quest in every soul to seek the Divine and its true source of origin. ]
