Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāmāvali (श्री महावाराही अष्टोत्तरशतनामावलि) – Variation 3

Acknowledgments – Shri Lorran for providing the text of the Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāma Stotram with two variations. The second acknowledgment goes to Śrī Yogāmba sameta Śrī Ātmānandanātha (Shri Ramesh Kutticad) whose book – “Meditative Texts”, has served as the primary reference for much of the content of this article.

Prologue – The Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāma Stotram and its derivative Śrī Mahāvārāhī Aṣṭottaraśatanāmāvali containing over 108 attributes are part of an esoteric and very secretive practice known as Śrīvidyā. It falls in the realm of tantra and worship of the Divine Mother in various forms. Technically it falls in the realm of Śākta texts. Any Aṣṭottaraśatanāma derives itself from the associated tantras, purāṇas, kalpas and other related texts. It is essentially a summary of the more elaborate Sahasranāma, that constitutes a thousand attributes of the deity. Studying the Aṣṭottaraśatanāma and other such attribute texts helps the sincere sādhaka (devotee) to enrich their practice of mantra japa and in the process earn the divine grace of the deity.

Śrī Mahāvārāhī along with Śrī Rājaśyāmala form the closest perimeter to the Divine Mother Śrī Lalitā and obtaining their grace, is the same as that of the ultimate reality - Śrī Lalitā. Śrī Mahāvārāhī is responsible for providing us a body to experience the karmas that we are saddled with from timeless births. With Her grace the sincere devotees gain self-realization and liberation by extinguishing all the karma from previous and current birth, thereby ending the infinite cycle of birth and death. Besides the spiritual benefits, the Divine Mother is also invoked for getting rid of all enemies, both internal and external as well as gaining immense wealth, property, health and higher status in the society. Both spiritual and material benefits are gained by praying sincerely to the Divine Mother. It is our hope that this offering serves the stated purpose.

ऐँ ग्लौँ ऐँ ॐ किरिचक्ररथारूढायै नमः

Salutations to the Divine Mother who rides the chariot called the Kiri Cakra run by a set of very fierce boar faced Yoginis. The Kiri Chakra is also the yantra for worshipping the Divine Mother Śrī Mahāvārāhī. In the enclosures of the Kiri Cakra constituting many boar-faced Yoginis, we also find a buffalo, lion and an antelope, all of which are different mounts of the Divine Mother Śrī Mahāvārāhī. The Kiri Cakra, as per Śrī Yogāmba sameta Śrī Ātmānandanātha (Shri Ramesh Kutticad) in his book "Meditative Texts", represents the skeleton that holds the flesh and blood in our bodies. The buffalo represents the desires and wants - kāma, which is accompanied by actions. Only a person whose worldly desires are met, is fit for higher sādhana. The lion represents the regal path - the dharma of Rāja yoga and Śrīvidyā. The one who treads this path is always confident and brave.  Such sādhakas are vīra, meaning heroes, who are highly regarded and respected by all. Lastly, the antelope represents the control of mind, as well as, following the discipline shown by the gurus, to whom we offer the deer mṛgi mudrā. The boars are great diggers and metaphorically represent digging through the deepest of our karmas and uprooting them from within. A sincere devotee of Śrī Mahāvārāhī will be freed of all karma and led to complete liberation - mokṣa by Her divine grace!
