Namaste!
I have read many of your texts and advice. As I'm French, I'm not very fluent to write in English...
I would like to know how to align this mantra with the breath. Can I do this jap without initiation ?
I thank you very much

Thank you very much for your reply, Sir !
I already read your article and wanted to know how "cutting" the mantra. My breath is long enough so that I could "say" it in one part.
Would you accept my request ?
God bless you !

If you can work on your breath, there is nothing like reciting the full mantra during inhalation, retention, exhalation and again retention outside, before we make the next inhalation..

The idea is to slow down the breath. So it would be ideal to slowly recite the mantra by breaking it into parts. For example, I would choose to break this as follows:-
1. During Inhalation:- Recite mentally and very slowly "om śrīṁ hrīṁ klīṁ".
2. During breath retention in your lungs:- Recite mentally and again very slowly "glauṁ gaṁ gaṇapataye varavarada".
3. During a very slow and controlled exhalation:- Recite mentally and slowly "sarvajanaṁ me".
4. During the last non-breathing stomach tucked in phase:- Recite mentally and slowly "vaśamānaya svāhā".
You could break the mantra in a different manner that may be easier for pronunciation. Ultimately, you may reach a state where the mantra automatically gets forgotten and you could be in deep meditation.
Breaking the mantra and aligning with the breathing phases of the Yogic breathing technique, helps in a higher level of concentration on the mantra itself. It is very hard for the mind to think of anything else, as you're simultaneously watching your breathing phase as well as concentrating on the part of the mantra that you need to recite during that phase!
The drawback of this type of recitation is the slow progress of the japa. But ultimately this may lead to a greater spiritual progress, than a very quick recitation using a japa mala.

My gratitude for such explanations.
Before you read, I thought of myself to be cut as follows:
Inhale: Om Gam Shrim HRIM Klim Glaum
retention: Ganapataye Varavarada
Exhale: Sarvajanam vashamanaya me
Retention: Svaha
This approach was presented to me after myself gathered unto Ganesh ... and I just read your proposal. Wonderful!

Let us not count the number of recitations. Till such time we experience material benefits, we have to chant. Normally, first results can be felt after you cross 25,000 repetitions. But, this again depends upon how you chant a mantra.

Dear Sir, Vanakkam!!! I am happy to see you through this blog, I use to refer your blog whenever I have any clarification.. you are doing a wonderful service, I bow for this!!! I have a doubt, I do mahaganapathi and bala japam, should I do anganiyasam, karaniyasam separately (twice - once for Mahaganapathi and once for bala) everytime when doing japam? When we start mahaganapathi we do thigbandham, usually when we complete we remove it, so should i perform Thigbandam for mahaganapathi first and remove it and should I do another thigbandham for bala? Ayyan Please clarify this!!!

Raviji, Is there a Shapoddhara/Utkeelan Mantra for Sri Maha Ganapati mantra? According to Kamalanandanatha of Simhee Aparajita Mantrayalayam, Arunachalam, the following is the Shapoddhara Mantra Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Gam Em Krom Keelaya Keelaya Swaha (to be recited 4 times before starting Mahaganapati Mantra Japa) After that "Om Gam Hroom Goom Hreem Phat Kalpadyaya nama Swaha Om Ganapataye Namaha Om Shetave Namaha" and so on. Rest of the process detailed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jDLgQUc3gwU (sorry its in telugu but mantras can be heard) thanks

The video does not provide a source for validation of the mantras. Some mantras are specified in the Devi Rahasya, but the main mantra specified is different from what is generally practiced. There are no specific utkīlana mantras specified in any authoritative documents for this mantra. However, if one wishes to apply the rules specified in Devi Rahasyam, the following can be done. For utkīlana, Add 1 (gam̐) bīja in the front and 1 (hrīm̐) bīja at the end of the main mantra. For sañjīvanaṃ - Add 2 (gam̐) bīja-s in front of the mantra. For śāpavimocanaṃ, the following mantra applies - oṃ gam̐ gaṇeśāna rudraśāpaṃ vimocaya svāhā. For sampuṭīkaraṇa, the following rule applies - Add 3 (hrīm̐) bīja-s in front of 'gaṇapataye' and 'om̐ gam̐ gam̐ gam̐' at the end of the mantra.

Please follow the same rules that I mentioned earlier, in another comment on this webpage. In general, these apply only to the specific mantra and you may use the generic stotras to achieve the needful. If you still wish to proceed with the rules of Devi Rahasyam, then you may do so and apply the same to this mantra. Before you apply any of these rules, please make sure that you have the Viniyoga and other nyāsa related information for the mantra that you wish to recite. It makes sense if you follow all the rules and not cherry pick a few.

If you are reciting the mantra as a standalone japa, then please follow the full procedures. If you are reciting this mantra as part of mahāṣoḍaśi mantra japa, then reciting the mantra a few times after the main mantra japa, is permitted. Also, please note that if this becomes ajapa due to mantra alignment with breath, then nothing is required. In such a scenario, which usually happens after a long time, we can simply stick to the mantra and recite at all times.

Sri Matre Namaha. Krishna Ji, I have done 3 mandalas of Ganapati Tarpana and 1 mandala of Homa with 250 Swahas each day. I have few queries regarding Ganapati Mantra Japa. I do japa 2hrs a day either in single sitting or 1hr per sitting. As of now I am doing Japa after Guru Dhyanam without Nyasa. Queries are : 1) During japa I adjust my sitting position due to numbness in the legs or due to any other body pains. 2) I do japa with open eyes or I do japa by standing if I feel sleepy. 3) My my mind keep wandering through out Japa. Please advice if I need make corrections in procedure or to take any special care. Sri Matre Namaha.

It is subtly conveyed in the Kulārṇava tantra, that mantra japa without nyāsā-s brings obstacles to one's mantra japa sādhana. I would suggest practicing abdominal breathing and ensuring that you switch to the left nostril or the dual nostril breathing during mantra japa, to improve the quality and make it more effective. Please look up the breathing articles on this website and elsewhere on the rationale and the utility for deploying the same. If you are falling in deep sleep during mantra japa, let it happen, there is nothing wrong. In fact a deep meditative state is highly desirable. Also, please lookup the various mediation techniques specified in the Vijñāna Bhairava tantra and see if any one of them can help you, in suppressing your mind during meditation and japa.

It is natural for this to occur. It is best to not do meditation immediately after a meal and one should wait for at least an hour or so before proceeding. Over time, you will be able to meditate for longer periods without the need for food or water.

Hi Krishna Ji, I need little more clarification regarding Japa. Does Japa needs to be done strictly in the sitting posture and eyes closed. can I do japa while walking, travelling in the bus, during free time in office, or during any other activity. Would it be considered towards actual Japa if do I so(while walking, travelling, so on..) and can lead to progress in Sadhana.

Japa should be done with abject and intense concentration upon the deity and immersing ourselves into the mantra. Deep contemplation is required to see any meaningful results. While this is ideal, it is definitely not possible while we are walking, travelling etc. For those who have aligned the mantra with the breath, this would happen automatically in the mind without any conscious effort. In terms of maintaining count, I would suggest using only the japa count that is done with full concentration upon the deity. This is usually in a sitting or any relaxed posture. The purpose of the japa is to please the deity and obtain the benefits and rise materially and spiritually and not just completing a specified count. The latter by itself serves no purpose, if the former is not realized. The deity is pleased when we follow all the procedures, seek proper guidance from our guru and also put in the best possible effort that we can. Eventually with the release of karmic effects, we may experience some benefits from our mantra japa.

E.g. "पृथिव्यात्मिकायै" etc. were only seen in the case of puja format for female deities (e.g. Bala Mantra Japa) and "पृथिव्यात्मने" etc. for male deities. Hence requested for correction as महागणपति being a male deity. Kindly clarify if it is interchangeably used irrespective of the gender of the deities. Thank you with pranam.

There is no variation in addressing the pañcabhūta-s. However, if you include the name of the devata or devi as a suffix, then you may use devatāyai namaḥ or devyai namaḥ respectively. In general, what has been specified, is sufficient and is most commonly used. As always, follow what has been specified by your guru, as he/she is the final authority in these matters.

Hello, Is there any possible confict when I do this Sri Mahaganapati japa together with the Sri Kubera Mantra (35 Lettered)? I have being doing the Mahaganapati for my malefic ketu and enjoying great effects. However, a few days when I add the Kubera Mantra for the same day with the Mahaganapai I usually felt irritated, short tempered, and a little bit stress even thought I followed the nyasa closely. I have a big debt that weigh on me. The kubera mantra seems to help but the side effects made me wonder if this is the right way to do. Please help. Namaste.

I would not recommend doing so. Practice Śrī Mahāgaṇapati mantra for at least 400,000 times before moving on to the Kubera mantra. This will help remove the obstacles that prevent you from achieving the desired results. All your debts can be waived by Śrī Mahāgaṇapati Himself. You can follow through the japa with a daily tarpaṇa which is listed on this site and elsewhere. Make sure that you are repeating in a moderate manner and in your mind only. Focus on the weapons and let these Astras do the weightlifting for you and relieve you of all debt.

Hi sir, can the Mahaganapati moola mantra be one's lifelong mantra or one needs to move towards a shakti/devi mantra eventually? Thank you.

It can be lifelong. No other mantra is necessary, unless you feel a strong inclination towards other deity mantras.

I request you to please help me on this. 1)How many days break one can take if one decided to 1/10 homa after 11 days Anusthan of Mool mantra? 2) Many a times I feel exhausted after Japa of mantra. how I can heal or avoid this exhaustion? Thanks/regards Jai

Ideally speaking, there should be no break. But if it is unavoidable, then continue at the earliest. Exhaustion could be due to excess mantra japa performed without starting with a few rounds of Prāṇāyama. It is important that the mantra japa should be performed silently in the mind and NOT verbally with sound. Each syllable should be spelt out correctly and not garbled due to the speed of japa. Try to do this in a conversational style and in a very smooth manner. It typically takes about an hour for me to perform 5 mālas of this mantra and I am not tired or yawning during the japa. In your particular case, you would have to spend many hours if you wish to complete 1 lakh of this mantra within 11 days and that definitely is very tiring. I would suggest that you choose 90 days or even 1 year to complete 1 lakh and take it from there. It is important to enjoy the mantra japa and feel His presence within you and not be in a hurry to finish off. Also, it is quite important that all the sections of the mantra japa are recited without fail on a daily basis. Most people just go about reciting the mantra, skipping the other sections. Doing so may not yield the desired results.

Hi there. I am hoping to get some kind guidance from anyone who is an experienced sadhaka of śrīmahāganapatī. I understand that it is all His Blessing to even think or pray to Him. Is there anything else that one can do apart from chanting His mantra and sahasranama. I have not been attracted to His tarpanam due to the ritualistic nature of it. I don’t know how to explain any further. But I am hoping someone can guide me on my journey. Thanks.

The true power of any tantric mantra can only be experienced when the prescribed pūja and associated pañcāṅga procedures are followed.

Namaste Guruji, I have been recently initiated to the Mahaganapati sadhana, and I know it is a sin to doubt my Guru. But I have a doubt as the Bija I was instructed in Shadanga nyasa and Bija/Shakti/Kilakam is Gam/Gaam/Geem/Goom instead of Glaam/Gleem/Gloom as mentioned here. I am a bit afraid to ask this to my guru as it would seem I am doubting him. Can you please help me with this? Thanks a lot

Some variations exist between various traditions. There is nothing wrong with what you are following. If you wish, you can do both variations of the nyāsas individually or combine them like gāṁ glāṁ etc. Either way, you can proceed with what you are initiated with. Wishing you the very best in your sādhana.
