Sarvabhayahara śrīnṛsiṃha mantrarāja pañcatriṃśatyakṣara mahāmantraḥ
(सर्वभयहर श्रीनृसिंह मन्त्रराज पञ्चत्रिंशत्यक्षर महामन्त्रः)

Initiation – Required.
Purpose – Wish fulfillment and complete protection from all dangers and misfortunes.
Prologue – Lord Nṛsiṁha is a very aggressive form of Lord Viṣṇu capable of destroying all types of enemies, miseries, dangerous diseases and adverse health conditions impacting us. He is also prayed to relieve us from all karmic debts, including monetary and spiritual.
The words “mṛtyu mṛtyum” indicating the termination of the life and death cycle, attest the ability of this mantra to confer liberation – mukti/mokṣa to the sincere sādhakas by the grace of Śrī Nṛsiṃha. This mantra capable of such benefits, becomes a Mantra Rāja, the King of all mantras!
This particular mantra was supposed to have been recited by the great ballard Śrī Annamācārya.
1.Viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) -

अस्यश्री अनुष्टुभ नृसिंह मन्त्रराज महामन्त्रस्य ।

श्री नृसिंहो देवता ।
हँ बीजं ।
ईँ शक्तिः ।
क्ष्रौँ कीलकं ।
मम मनोवाञ्चा फल सिद्ध्यर्थे श्रीगुरोरनुज्ञाया महामन्त्र जपे विनियोगः ॥
Meaning - This prayer/mantra japa is to invoke Śrī Nṛsiṃha in our heart, perform mantra japa to obtain His complete grace in all aspects, including the four puruṣārthas – dharma (following own nature), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) and all desires that one may seek from the Divine. The sage who visually saw this mantra (ṛṣiḥ) is Lord Brahmā, the Creator. The meter (chandas) for the mantra is Anuṣṭup of thirty-two syllables and its variations. The deity is Śrī Nṛsiṃha, the seed (bījaṃ) is ham̐, the power (śakti) is īm̐. The key (kīlaka) that binds the mantra is kṣraum̐. By the grace and command of our guru and the guru lineage, we pledge to undertake the mantra japa in full earnest.

Meaning: May the directions be charmed and bound, to prevent any external obstacles from the powers residing in the triads – the Earth, atmosphere and the heavens.

6. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -
satya-jñāna sukha-svarūpam-amalam kṣīrābdhi madhya-sthitam ।
yogārūḍha matiprasanna-vadanam bhūṣāsahasrojjvalam ॥
tryakṣyam cakra-pināka-sābhayavarān bibhrāṇa markacchaviṃ ।
chatrībhūta phaṇīndra mindudhavalam lakṣmī nṛsiṃham bhaje ॥
सत्यज्ञान सुखस्वरूपममलम् क्षीराब्धि मध्यस्थितम् ।
योगारूढ मतिप्रसन्नवदनम् भूषासहस्रोज्ज्वलम् ॥
त्र्यक्ष्यम् चक्रपिनाकसाभयवरान् बिभ्राणमर्कच्छविं ।
छत्रीभूत फणीन्द्र मिन्दुधवलम् लक्ष्मी नृसिंहम् भजे ॥
Meaning: Salutations to the Divine Lord Śrī Lakṣmī Nṛsiṃha who is the embodiment of Truth, wisdom and knowledge. He is a half-lion and half humanoid in appearance. He denotes happiness, peace, prosperity, health and auspiciousness. He is completely blemish less and denotes pure joy. He is present in the middle of the ocean of consciousness, seated in a yogic posture with a very endearing appearance. He is resplendent with the radiation of a zillion suns. He is three-eyed, holds a discus – cakra, pināka – Lord Rudra’s bow and displays the fear allaying Abhaya and the wish granting Vara mudras. He is of golden complexion, seated on the coil of the serpent king Ananta with His raised hood appearing like an umbrella and seated beside Him is the white complexioned Divine Mother Śrī Lakṣmī.
. The cakra blinds us away from all the distractions. The pināka is capable of launching the most powerful weapon called the pāśupatāstra, which destroys all triads and thus reveals our true self as none other than the super-consciousness, which is none that Lord Śrī Lakṣmī Nṛsiṃha. The serpent represents the mystical Kuṇḍalinī śakti and the raised hood is the pinnacle Sahasrāra denoting complete spiritual awakening. The presence of the Divine Mother represents auspiciousness and abundance. The half-lion and half-humanoid appearance denote His extreme ferocity in vanquishing enemies, both internal and external.
māṇikyādri samaprabhaṃ nijarucā santrasta-rakṣo-gaṇam jānun-yasta-karāmbujaṃ trinayanaṃ ratnol-lasad-bhūṣaṇam ।
bāhubhyāṃ dhṛta-śaṅkha-cakram-aniśaṃ daṃṣṭrāgra-vaktrollāsat jvālā-jihvam-udagra-keśa-nicayaṃ vande nṛsiṃhaṃ vibhum ॥
माणिक्याद्रि समप्रभं निजरुचा सन्त्रस्तरक्षोगणम् जानुन्यस्तकराम्बुजं त्रिनयनं रत्नोल्लसद्भूषणम् ।
बाहुभ्यां धृतशङ्खचक्रमनिशं दंष्ट्राग्रवक्त्रोल्लासत् ज्वालाजिह्वमुदग्रकेशनिचयं वन्दे नृसिंहं विभुम् ॥
Salutations to the omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent Divine Lord Nṛsiṃha (Viṣṇu) who is half lion and half humanoid, resplendent with the brilliance of a mountain of rubies appearing crimson red in complexion. His innate nature is complete protection and He sits very confidently in an erect yogic posture with His lower arms placed on His knees and the upper arms carrying a discus – cakra and a conch - śaṅkha. He is adorned with all types of precious gems all over His body. He has a wide gaping mouth with diamond teeth, emitting fire from his protruding tongue and appearing extremely fierce with long flowing tresses of thick hair resembling a lion.
His red complexion denotes passion – the rajasic tattva that is responsible for Sustenance of the entire Creation. The cakra and śaṅkha dispel all distractions and turn our focus to the vibrations of the Creation – the mātṛkā śaktis who are capable of manifesting any and every desire of ours. The precious gems denote the extreme opulence that He bestows upon His sincere devotees. The flames from His mouth and the diamond teeth burn away and tear apart all types of karmic influences to help the devotee ascend in all walks of life and ultimately reach His abode (self-realization and liberation). The half-lion and half-humanoid appearance denote His extreme ferocity in vanquishing enemies, both internal and external.

Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position. |

8. Mūla Mantraḥ (मूलमन्त्रः) -
om̐ īm̐ ham̐ ugram vīram mahāviṣṇum jvalantam sarvato-mukham nṛsiṃham bhīṣaṇam bhadram mṛtyu mṛtyum namāmyaham ॥
ॐ ईँ हँ उग्रं वीरं महाविष्णुं ज्वलन्तं सर्वतोमुखं नृसिंहं भीषणं भद्रं मृत्युमृत्युं नमाम्यहं ॥
The 33 lettered Śrī Nṛsiṃha mantra should be recited at least 108 times. Initiation is essential.
Meaning - This is a thirty-three syllabled mantra with some syllables representing bīja (seed) mantras. The parts of the main mantra including the bījas are described below. –
- The bīja (seed) mantra “om̐ (ॐ)” consists of – ‘au’ => healing and deep cleansing, ‘m̐’ => removes misery. Ushers in auspiciousness.
- The Kāmakalā bīja (seed) mantra īm̐ (ईँ) represents the union of Śiva and Śakti, the static and dynamic states of the super-consciousness. It leads us directly to self-realization and ultimate liberation. It is also the Īśāni devi bīja signifying the richness of divine perfection and is also the Turiyā bīja.
- The Haṃsavatī Devi Mātṛkā and Ākāśa bīja (seed) mantra “ham̐ (हँ)” represents the True Self and the aspect of attaining liberation and merger with IT. This is the last bīja in the word ‘aham’ representing the ego or the individual self, beginning with ‘a’, the creation and ending with ‘ham’ the liberation and merging with the True Self.
- The word ”ugram (उग्रं)” denotes ferocity and extremely aggression.
- The word ”vīram (वीरं)” denotes bravery, heroism and extolled warrior status.
- The word ”mahāviṣṇum (महाविष्णुं)” is a reference to the Divine Lord as being omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient. He is the entirety of the Creation.
- The word “jvalantam (ज्वलन्तं)” denotes the radiation of enormous engulfing fires.
- The word “sarvato-mukham (सर्वतोमुखं)” literally means facing all directions.
- The word “nṛsiṃham (नृसिंहं)” means half-lion and half-humanoid being combining the ferocity of a lion and applying the context on the human side towards our aspirations, wants, needs, protection etc.
- The word “bhīṣaṇam (भीषणं)” denotes an extremely terrific form and appearance.
- The word “bhadram (भद्रं)” denotes welfare, good fortune, auspiciousness etc.
- The words “mṛtyu mṛtyum (मृत्युमृत्युं)” denote the elimination of death causing diseases and ailments as well as all types of severe medical conditions and anomalies leading to death. Freedom from the fear of death by His grace is clearly denoted, to the extent of conquering it, to ensure a long lifespan.
- The word “namāmyaham (नमाम्यहं)” consists of the bīja “namaḥ” and the word “aham”. The hṛdaya bīja (seed) mantra namaḥ (नमः) refers to our salutations to the Divine and also constitutes a bond that is nurtured in our heart. The word “aham (अहं)” refers to the individual ego and self. The combined word is simply denoting our attachment and complete surrender to the Lord to gain His grace in all aspects of our life.
Salutations to the highly revered Divine in the form of Lord Nṛsiṃha (Viṣṇu), the Sustainer and Protector of all realms. May the omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent Lord bestow abundance in all aspects and fulfill all our wishes, remove all our fears, release us from all types of karmic debts and offer His protection throughout our lifetime for us and our loved ones.

महाविष्णुं - शिरसे स्वाहा । |

jvalantam sarvatomukham - śikhāyai vaṣaṭ । |
ज्वलन्तं सर्वतोमुखं - शिखायै वषट् । |
Open the right thumb and touch the back of the head. This is the point where there is a tuft of hair. |

nṛsiṃham bhīṣaṇam - kavacāya huṃ । |
नृसिंहं भीषणं - कवचाय हुं । |
Cross both the hands and touch both shoulders with the palms. |

bhadram mṛtyumṛtyu - netratrayāya vauṣaṭ । |
भद्रं मृत्युमृत्युं - नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् । |
Touch the eyes with the right index and ring fingers, with the middle finger touching the ājña cakra. |

namāmyaham - astrāya phaṭ । |
नमाम्यहम् - अस्त्राय फट् । |
Open up the left palm and strike it three times with index and middle fingers of the right hand. |
7 |
iti ṣaḍaṅga nyāsaḥ ॥ |
इति षडङ्ग न्यासः ॥ |
Thus ends the six-part Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsa. |
bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digvimokaḥ ॥
भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्विमोकः ॥
Meaning: May the directions get unlocked to allow ourselves to experience the grace from all the triads of the three realms.
10. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -
satya-jñāna sukha-svarūpam-amalam kṣīrābdhi madhya-sthitam ।
yogārūḍha matiprasanna-vadanam bhūṣāsahasrojjvalam ॥
tryakṣyam cakra-pināka-sābhayavarān bibhrāṇa markacchaviṃ ।
chatrībhūta phaṇīndra mindudhavalam lakṣmī nṛsiṃham bhaje ॥
सत्यज्ञान सुखस्वरूपममलम् क्षीराब्धि मध्यस्थितम् ।
योगारूढ मतिप्रसन्नवदनम् भूषासहस्रोज्ज्वलम् ॥
त्र्यक्ष्यम् चक्रपिनाकसाभयवरान् बिभ्राणमर्कच्छविं ।
छत्रीभूत फणीन्द्र मिन्दुधवलम् लक्ष्मी नृसिंहम् भजे ॥
māṇikyādri samaprabhaṃ nijarucā santrasta-rakṣo-gaṇam jānun-yasta-karāmbujaṃ trinayanaṃ ratnol-lasad-bhūṣaṇam ।
bāhubhyāṃ dhṛta-śaṅkha-cakram-aniśaṃ daṃṣṭrāgra-vaktrollāsat jvālā-jihvam-udagra-keśa-nicayaṃ vande nṛsiṃhaṃ vibhum ॥
माणिक्याद्रि समप्रभं निजरुचा सन्त्रस्तरक्षोगणम् जानुन्यस्तकराम्बुजं त्रिनयनं रत्नोल्लसद्भूषणम् ।
बाहुभ्यां धृतशङ्खचक्रमनिशं दंष्ट्राग्रवक्त्रोल्लासत् ज्वालाजिह्वमुदग्रकेशनिचयं वन्दे नृसिंहं विभुम् ॥

यँ वाय्व्यात्मने धूपम् कल्पयामि नमः । |
Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the index fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs. |

ram̐ vahnyātmane dīpam kalpayāmi namaḥ । |
रँ वह्न्यात्मने दीपम् कल्पयामि नमः । |
Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the middle fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs. |

vam̐ amṛtātmane naivedyam kalpayāmi namaḥ । |
वँ अमृतात्मने नैवेद्यम् कल्पयामि नमः । |
Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the ring fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs. |

sam̐ sarvātmane karpūramiśrita tāmbūlādi sarvopacārān kalpayāmi namaḥ । |
सँ सर्वात्मने कर्पूरमिश्रित ताम्बूलादि सर्वोपचारान् कल्पयामि नमः । |
Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position. |

Iti Pañcapūjā ॥ |
इति पञ्चपूजा ॥ |
Thus ends the Pañcapūjā. |
12. Samarpaṇam (समर्पणम्) –
guhyādi guhya goptvātvam gṛhaṇāsmat kṛtaṃ japaṃ ।
siddhirbhavatu me deva tvat prasadān mayī sthirā ॥
गुह्यादि गुह्य गोप्त्वात्वम् गृहणास्मत् कृतं जपं ।
सिद्धिर्भवतु मे देव त्वत् प्रसदान् मयी स्थिरा ॥
Meaning: O Lord, you are the most hidden secret of all secrets. May these mantra japa counts performed by me, be offered to you in totality. Our prayers and hope, are that your grace shall remain with us always.
