Initiation Required. It is extremely dangerous to practice this mantra without the guidance from a well accomplished practicing guru.

Purpose – Removes all types of fear, diseases and adverse health conditions as well as relief from all types of dangerous enemies and inimical influences and bad karma. Dispels black magic and all types of spells and spirits. Frees us from the karmic bondage and leads us to self-realization and ultimate liberation.

Note - Śrī Śarabhaśāluveśvara, a form of Lord Rudra/Śiva is also known as Śrī Ākāśa Bhairava is similar in form and ferocity to Lord Śrī Nṛsiṁha (Viṣṇu), also known as Śrī Svacchanda Bhairava. Lord Śarabha is said to have pacified the anger of Lord Nṛsiṁha, when He (Lord Rudra) took upon Himself a part-lion, part-bird, part-humanoid form with eight lion legs, that came to be known as Śarabha. Lord Nṛsiṁha had assumed an even more fierce eight-faced Aṣṭamukha Gaṇḍabheruṇḍa form to counter Lord Śarabha and once their battle had caused enough destruction, the Divine Mother Śrī Pratyaṅgirā as Atharvaṇa Bhadrakālī with a thousand lion heads, let out a shriek resounding like a hysterical laughter that shook the stars and immediately brought both Lord Nṛsiṁha and Lord Śarabha to submission and truce. It is to be noted that neither Lord Nṛsiṁha nor Lord Śarabha can destroy each other, as they are the Sustainer (Viṣṇu) and Destroyer (Rudra) of the Universe and the balance has to be in place. Same applies in respect of the Creator (Brahma). As and when there is an imbalance in these entities, a correction takes place by the grace of the Divine Mother Lalita.

When the quantum of inherited and obstructing karma is enormously large that would require an enormous force to silence it, then the mantras of either Lord Nṛsiṁha or Lord Śarabha may be considered. Both are equally powerful, although this particular mantra is said to have calmed Lord Aṣṭamukha Gaṇḍabheruṇḍa and is therefore considered to be a hidden face of Lord Nṛsiṁha. The mantras of the Divine Mother Śrī Pratyaṅgirā are mainly for those who deeply adore and worship this form of the Divine Mother. Her power maybe utilized for major wars that maybe internal or external.

Meaning - This prayer/mantra japa is to invoke ŚŚarabhaśāluveśvara in our heart, perform mantra japa to obtain His complete grace in all aspects, including the four puruṣārthasdharma (following own nature), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) and all desires that one may seek from the Divine. The sage who visually saw this mantra (ṛṣiḥ) is Lord Kālāgni Rudra, the Destroyer. The meter (chandas) for the mantra is Jagatī of forty-eight syllables and its variations. The deity is Āpaduddhāraṇo Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava, the seed (bījaṃ) is hrām̐ vām̐, the power (śakti) is hrīm̐ vīm̐. The key (kīlaka) that binds the mantra is hrūm̐ vūm̐. By the grace and command of our guru and the guru lineage, we pledge to undertake the mantra japa in full earnest.

Open up the left palm and strike it three times with index and middle fingers of the right hand.

bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digbandhaḥ

भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्बन्धः

Meaning: May the directions be charmed and bound, to prevent any external obstacles from the powers residing in the triads – the Earth, atmosphere and the heavens.

ऊरूस्थौ व्याधिमृत्यू शरभवरखगरच श्चण्डवातातिवेगः

संहर्ता सर्वशत्रून् स जयति शरभः शालुवः पक्षिराजः ॥ २ ॥

मृगस्त्वर्ध शरीरेण पक्षाभ्यां चञ्चुना द्विजः अधोवक्त्रश्चतुष्पाद ऊर्ध्ववक्त्रश्चतुर्भुजः ।

कालाग्निदहनोपेतो नीलजीमूतसन्निभः अरिस्तद् दर्शनादेव विनष्ट बलविक्रमः ॥ ३ ॥

सटाछटोग्ररूपाय पक्ष विक्षिप्त भूबृते ।

अष्टपादाय रुद्राय नमः शरभमूर्तये ॥ ४ ॥

 

Meaning: Salutations to Lord Śrī Śarabhaśāluveśvara (Ākāśa Bhairava), who is three-eyed reflecting the Maṇḍalā śaktis of the Sun, Moon and Fire, bearing matted hair and large enclosing diamond nails, capable of cutting through anything. He appears restless and moving constantly with great aggression with the tongue protruding out and gutting out engulfing flames. His wings are empowered by the enormous energies of the Divine Mothers Kālī (Pratyaṅgirā) and Durgā (Śūlinī). His heart, abdomen, chest and stomach are humanoid, filled with the aggression and protective abilities of Lord Bhairava and the body itself is full of flame. He is the best amongst the great predatory birds, flying with great speeds, extremely terrifying and putting an end to all types of vexatious and tormenting beings and objects. He completely vanquishes all His enemies and is hailed by all as the great indomitable eight-legged regent of all birds and large beasts. He is half lion and half bird. He is two-faced with two protruding beaks. He has four limbs associated with the lower head and endowed with four arms attributed to the upper head. He appears like a dark cloud endowed with the fires of dissolution to completely destroy all enemies at first sight itself! He is unparalleled in bravery, strength and aggression. He has a cluster of manes of enormous and ferocious looking lions coupled with the wings of enormous carnivorous bird-beasts that can tear apart, any prey in its vicinity. He is the undisputed ruler of all the earthly realms. May we meditate upon this fabulous bird-beast form of Lord Rudra and offer our salutations to Him at all times, to gain His protection from all types of enemies and opponents.

Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position.

  1. Mūlamantraḥ (मूलमन्त्रः) -

ॐ खेँ खेँ खँ खाँ फँ रँ घे घे श्लीँ हुँ फट् सर्वशत्रु संहारणाय शरभशालुवाय पक्षिराजाय ह्रीँ हुँ फट् स्वाहा ॥

 

The 38 lettered Śrī Śarabhaśāluveśvara (Ākāśa Bhairava) mantra should be recited at least 108 times. Initiation is essential.

 

Meaning -

This is a thirty-eight syllabled mantra with some syllables representing bīja (seed) mantras. The parts of the main mantra including the bījas are described below. –

 

  1. The bīja (seed) mantra o () consists of – ‘au’ => healing and deep cleansing, m̐’ => removes misery. Ushers in auspiciousness.
  2. The variation of the Naṭī bīja khem̐ (खेँ)consists of – ‘kh’ => signifying Vāraṇa denoting resistance, invincibility and prevention. It is also the Sadāśiva tattva, which is a combination of Śiva and Śakti manifesting in all the five natural elements constituting matter. The letter ‘e’ for Ūrdhvakeśī signifying alertness and also the pinnacle of fulfillment and awareness – the parātattva state of Paramaśiva, nāda for parā and the vindu (m̐) for Duḥkhaharaṇa, meaning removal of all misery.

Overall, this bīja signifies the immense power of the Lord, to persist through any obstacles and remain active and ready to overcome any type of resistance in fulfilling our objectives.

The bīja is repeated twice to emphasize the need and to remind the Lord once again.

  1. The Khaṇḍitā Mātṛkā bīja (seed) mantra “kha (खँ)”, represents the severance and detachment from all desires and the effects of all triads. It consists of ‘kha’ denoting
  2. The bīja (seed) mantra “khā (खाँ)”, consists of – ‘kh’ => signifying Vāraṇa denoting resistance, invincibility and prevention. It is also the Sadāśiva tattva, which is a combination of Śiva and Śakti manifesting in all the five natural elements constituting matter. The letter ā for Ākāra or Ākarṣaṇa, signifying attraction and expansion, nāda for parā and the vindu (m̐) for Duḥkhaharaṇa, meaning removal of all misery.

Overall, this bīja signifies the immense power of the Lord, to persist through any obstacles and remain active and expand as necessary to overcome any type of resistance in fulfilling our objectives.

  1. The Phaṭkāriṇī Mātṛkā bīja (seed) mantra “pha (फँ)”, denotes freedom from all types of worries and also signifies the granting of magical siddhis. It also consists of – ‘ph’ => signifying the Sadāśiva tattva, which is a combination of Śiva and Śakti manifesting in all the five natural elements constituting matter. The letter ‘a’ for Akāra, signifying the Creation Itself and manifesting anything of desire, nāda for parā and the vindu (m̐) for Duḥkhaharaṇa, meaning removal of all misery.

Overall, this bīja signifies the immense power of the Lord, to manifest anything of desire and importance to us in fulfilling our objectives and removing all our worries.

  1. The Agni bīja (seed) mantra “ra (रँ)”, denotes fire and passion in fulfilling our objectives.
  2. The bīja (seed) mantra “ghe (घे)”, denotes the letters ‘gh’ denoting Medhā signifying prudence. The letter ‘e’, for Bhaga signifying wealth, welfare, prosperity, success and happiness in every aspect.

This bīja denotes all the prudence and knowledge required to gain immense wealth for the welfare of oneself and their loved ones. It is repeated twice to remind the Lord to grant at once.

  1. The Pāśupata bīja (seed) mantra ślīm̐ (श्लीँ) consists of – ś’ indicates Śakti the energy and force behind the entire Creation. She is the pure will of the super-consciousness and is the super-consciousness itself in its dynamic aspect. The repha ‘r’ indicates fire and drive, ‘ī’ indicates tuṣṭi or satisfaction, m̐’ denotes nāda indicating parā or Śakti and vindu indicates Duḥkhahara or removal of all miseries.
  2. The Kavaca bīja (seed) mantra “hum̐ (हुँ)” invokes protection from all harmful entities inimical to us. In the context of this mantra, it is for spiritual and material desires. Hum̐ (हुँ) consists of – ‘h’ => Brahman/śiva, ‘u’ => destruction of all fear and stillness within, ‘m̐’ => remove misery.
  3. The Astra bīja (seed) mantra “phaṭ (फट्)” is repeated twice to weaponize and ensure the complete destruction of all evil and misery.
  4. The words “sarvaśatru saṃhāraṇāya (सर्वशत्रु संहारणाय)” refers to the complete termination of all types of enemies – internal and external.
  5. The word śarabha-śāluvāya (शरभशालुवाय)” denotes His enormous bird-animal-humanoid form.
  6. The word pakṣirājāya (पक्षिराजाय)” signifies that He is the King of all birds given His indomitable power and size.
  7. The Bhuvaneśvarī bīja (seed) mantra “hrī (ह्रीँ) consists of – ‘h’ => Brahman/śiva, ‘r’ => fire and drive within us, ‘ī’ => energy and the source of all power that helps us ascend, ‘m̐ => removal of all miseries and facilitator of self-realization and ultimate liberation.

In addition, ‘h’ represents the ether (ākāśa) and the infinite, ‘r’ represents the fire (agni), ‘ī’ is air (vāyu).  Adding the Earth (pṛthvī) element along with Water (jala), completes all the natural elements that are responsible for the Creation and Sustenance. The Divine Mother Bhuvaneśvarī, is the Universal Mother and is the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer of all the three realms called as bhūḥ (Terrestrial), bhuvaḥ (Celestial) and svaḥ (Infernal). The triads are also representative and inclusive of the physical, astral and causal bodies. The letter ’ denoting nāda-bindu, is for removal of all miseries and facilitation of self-realization and ultimate liberation.

Overall, this bīja represents power and authority of all types. It is also called the tantra praṇava, equating its status with the om̐ bīja.

  • The Kavaca bīja mantra “hum̐ (हुँ)” is invoked again to empower the Astra bīja mantra “phaṭ (फट्)” to weaponize it with maximum force.
  • The Vahnisundarī bīja (seed) mantra “svāhā (स्वाहा)” represents complete submission and surrender to the Divine.

 

Salutations to the highly revered Divine in the form of Śrī Śarabhaśāluveśvara - Ākāśa Bhairava (form of Lord Śiva/Rudra Himself), who bestows complete protection from all types of enemies, irrespective of how dangerous or enormous they are, as well as from all types of calamities, miseries, disasters, dangers, evil spirits, black magic, diseases, adverse health conditions and bad karma and awakens the inner self within, by absorbing all our karma into Himself.

He grants spiritual knowledge and transforms us completely and makes us realize that we are none other than the blemish-less and pure super-consciousness known as Brahman.

May the enormous and unassailable, indomitable bird-beast-humanoid King of all beasts and birds, the most terrific Lord Śarabha, kindle our intellect and illumine it.

sarvaśatru saṃhāraṇāya - śikhāyai vaṣaṭ ।

सर्वशत्रु संहारणाय - शिखायै वषट् ।

Open the right thumb and touch the back of the head. This is the point where there is a tuft of hair.

śarbhaśāluvāya - kavacāya huṃ ।

शर्भशालुवाय - कवचाय हुं ।

Cross both the hands and touch both shoulders with the palms.

pakṣirājāya - netratrayāya vauṣaṭ ।

पक्षिराजाय - नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट् ।

Touch the eyes with the right index and ring fingers, with the middle finger touching the ājña cakra.

hrīm̐ hum̐ phaṭ svāhā - astrāya phaṭ ।

ह्रीँ हुँ फट् स्वाहा - अस्त्राय फट् ।

Open up the left palm and strike it three times with index and middle fingers of the right hand.

iti ṣaḍaṅga nyāsaḥ

इति षडङ्ग न्यासः ॥

Thus ends the six-part Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsa.

 

bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digvimokaḥ

भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्विमोकः

 

Meaning: May the directions get unlocked to allow ourselves to experience the grace from all the triads of the three realms.

 

10. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -

 

candrārkāgnis-tridṛṣṭiḥ kuliśa-varanakha ścañcalo'tyugra jihvaḥ

kālīdurgāca pakṣau hṛdayajaṭharago bhairavo vāḍavāgniḥ 1

ūrūsthau vyādhimṛtyū śarabhavara-khagaraca ścaṇḍa-vātātivegaḥ

saṃhartā sarvaśatrūn sa jayati śarabhaḥ śāluvaḥ pakṣirājaḥ 2

mṛgastvardha śarīreṇa pakṣābhyāṃ cañcunā dvijaḥ adhovaktraś-catuṣpāda ūrdhvavaktraś-caturbhujaḥ

kālāgni-dahanopeto nīla-jīmūta-sannibhaḥ aristad darśanādeva vinaṣṭa balavikramaḥ 3

saṭāchaṭogra-rūpāya pakṣa vikṣipta bhūbṛte

aṣṭapādāya rudrāya namaḥ śarabhamūrtaye 4

चन्द्रार्काग्निस्त्रिदृष्टिः कुलिशवरनख श्चञ्चलोऽत्युग्र जिह्वः ।

कालीदुर्गाच पक्षौ हृदयजठरगो भैरवो वाडवाग्निः ॥ १ ॥

ऊरूस्थौ व्याधिमृत्यू शरभवरखगरच श्चण्डवातातिवेगः ।

संहर्ता सर्वशत्रून् स जयति शरभः शालुवः पक्षिराजः ॥ २ ॥

मृगस्त्वर्ध शरीरेण पक्षाभ्यां चञ्चुना द्विजः अधोवक्त्रश्चतुष्पाद ऊर्ध्ववक्त्रश्चतुर्भुजः ।

कालाग्निदहनोपेतो नीलजीमूतसन्निभः अरिस्तद् दर्शनादेव विनष्ट बलविक्रमः ॥ ३ ॥

सटाछटोग्ररूपाय पक्ष विक्षिप्त भूबृते ।

अष्टपादाय रुद्राय नमः शरभमूर्तये ॥ ४ ॥

हँ आकाशात्मने पुष्पम् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the thumbs of both hands with the upper tip of the index fingers.

yam̐ vāyvyātmane dhūpam kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

यँ वाय्व्यात्मने धूपम् कल्पयामि नमः

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the index fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

ram̐ vahnyātmane dīpam kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

रँ वह्न्यात्मने दीपम् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the middle fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

vam̐ amṛtātmane naivedyam kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

वँ अमृतात्मने नैवेद्यम् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the ring fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

sam̐ sarvātmane karpūramiśrita tāmbūlādi sarvopacārān kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

सँ सर्वात्मने कर्पूरमिश्रित ताम्बूलादि सर्वोपचारान् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position.

Thus ends the Pañcapūjā.

 

12. Samarpaṇam (समर्पणम्) –

 

guhyādi guhya goptvātvam gṛhaṇāsmat kṛtaṃ japaṃ
siddhirbhavatu me deva tvat prasadān mayī sthirā

गुह्यादि गुह्य गोप्त्वात्वम् गृहणास्मत् कृतं जपं ।

सिद्धिर्भवतु मे देव त्वत् प्रसदान् मयी स्थिरा

 

Meaning: O Lord, you are the most hidden secret of all secrets. May these mantra japa counts performed by me, be offered to you in totality. Our prayers and hope, are that your grace shall remain with us always.
