Purpose – Removes all types of fear, diseases and adverse health conditions. Dispels black magic and all types of spells and spirits. Frees us from the karmic bondage and leads us to self-realization and ultimate liberation.
Note - Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha, a form of Lord Rudra/Śiva is also known as Śrī Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava (disambiguation - Baṭuka), due to His haste and fool hardiness in consuming the vicious poison and retaining it in His throat, turning it blue, at the time of the churning of the celestial ocean by the celestial devas and their cousins and half-brothers, the daityas. The celestial ocean is an analogy of the ocean of the super-consciousness that is churned to manifest the entire Creation. The poison is analogous to the karma and various energies and manifestations that could harm the sentient beings and even the existence of the insentient. The fool hardiness (Vaṭuka) is the great compassion of the Lord and ensuring the manifestation of the Creation. The karmic poison that we possess acquired over our countless lifetimes, is at once consumed by the Lord by His grace and He is therefore the most compassionate Śrī Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava.
1.Viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) -
asyaśrī nīlakaṇṭha mahāmantrasya ।
bṛhadāraṇyaka ṛṣiḥ ।

āpaduddhāraṇo mahāvaṭuka bhairavo devatā ।

mama bhūta preta piśācādyuccāṭanārthe śrī-guror-anujñāyā mahāmantra jape viniyogaḥ ॥
अस्यश्री नीलकण्ठ महामन्त्रस्य ।
बृहदारण्यक ऋषिः ।
अनुष्टुप् छन्दः ।
आपदुद्धारणो महावटुक भैरवो देवता ।
ह्राँ वाँ बीजं ।

मम भूत प्रेत पिशाचाद्युच्चाटनार्थे श्रीगुरोरनुज्ञाया महामन्त्र जपे विनियोगः ॥
Meaning - This prayer/mantra japa is to invoke Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha in our heart, perform mantra japa to obtain His complete grace in all aspects, including the four puruṣārthas – dharma (following own nature), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) and all desires that one may seek from the Divine. The sage who visually saw this mantra (ṛṣiḥ) is Bṛhadāraṇyaka. The meter (chandas) for the mantra is Anuṣṭup of thirty-two syllables and its variations. The deity is Āpaduddhāraṇo Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava, the seed (bījaṃ) is hrām̐ vām̐, the power (śakti) is hrīm̐ vīm̐. The key (kīlaka) that binds the mantra is hrūm̐ vūm̐. By the grace and command of our guru and the guru lineage, we pledge to undertake the mantra japa in full earnest.

bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digbandhaḥ ॥
भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्बन्धः ॥
Meaning: May the directions be charmed and bound, to prevent any external obstacles from the powers residing in the triads – the Earth, atmosphere and the heavens.
5.Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -
karakalita kapālaḥ kuṇḍalī daṇḍapāṇiḥ taruṇa timira nīlo vyāla yajñopavītī ।
kratusamaya saparyā vighna vicchedahetuḥ jayati vaṭukanādha siddhidas-sādhakānām ॥
करकलित कपालः कुण्डली दण्डपाणिः तरुण तिमिर नीलो व्याल यज्ञोपवीती ।
क्रतुसमय सपर्या विघ्न विच्छेदहेतुः जयति वटुकनाध सिद्धिदस्साधकानाम् ॥
Meaning: Salutations to Lord Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava, youthful and dark in complexion, holding in His four arms, a bowl underneath a dripping severed head in one set of arms and a drum as well as a stick, on His other set of arms. He is adorned with a snake wrapped around His upper body like a sacred thread. He is extremely resolute in removing all obstacles and tearing asunder all difficulties and miseries in a very timely manner. Praise be upon Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava who grants fruition (siddhi) to all His sincere sādhakas and also fulfills His role as the most dependable protector and grantor of all wishes!
The severed head represents the removal of ego, the cup denotes an empty mind ready to accept the Divine teachings. The stick denotes discipline and the drum denotes the sound vibrations of the mātṛkā śaktis across the entire Creation. The serpent is the awakened Kuṇḍalinī śakti embracing the cakras and awakening them to their full potential.

Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position. |

7. Mūlamantraḥ (मूलमन्त्रः) -
om̐ śrīm̐ hrīm̐ klīm̐ kṣmryūm̐ vaṭukāya āpaduddhāraṇāya kuru kuru vaṭukāya hrīm̐ ॥
ॐ श्रीँ ह्रीँ क्लीँ क्ष्म्र्यूँ वटुकाय आपदुद्धारणाय कुरु कुरु वटुकाय ह्रीँ ॥
The 25 lettered Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava mantra should be recited at least 108 times. Initiation is essential.
Meaning -
This is a twenty-five syllabled mantra with some syllables representing bīja (seed) mantras. The parts of the main mantra including the bījas are described below. –
- The bīja (seed) mantra om̐ (ॐ) consists of – ‘au’ => healing and deep cleansing, ‘m̐’ => removes misery. Ushers in auspiciousness.
- The bīja (seed) mantra śrīm̐ (श्रीँ) consists of – ‘śa’ indicates Mahālakṣmī, repha ‘ra’ indicates dhana or wealth, ‘ī’ indicates tuṣṭi or satisfaction, ‘m̐’ denotes nāda indicating parā or śakti and vindu indicates duḥkhahara or removal of all miseries.
- The bīja (seed) mantra hrīm̐ (ह्रीँ) consists of – ‘h’ => Brahman/śiva, ‘r’ => fire and drive within us, ‘ī’ => energy and the source of all power that helps us ascend, ‘m̐’ => removal of all miseries and facilitator of self-realization and ultimate liberation.
- The bīja (seed) mantra klīm̐ (क्लीँ) consists of – ‘ka’ is for Kāmadeva or Kṛṣṇa, indicating all our wishes, aspirations and desires, ‘la’ for indra indicating victory in all undertakings, ‘ī’ for tuṣṭi, meaning fulfillment and contentment, ‘m̐’ for sukha, meaning enjoyment as well as removal of all miseries and facilitation of self-realization and ultimate liberation.
- The Tumburu (Indian/Ceylon ebony tree) bīja (seed) mantra kṣmryūm̐ (क्ष्म्र्यूँ) consists of – ‘kṣ’ indicates Nṛsiṃha, as well the beginning and the end of the entire Creation, ‘m’ indicates Mahākāla – the Lord of Time and by extension timelessness, ‘r’ indicates Brahma the Creator, ‘y’ signifies the air (vāyu) element and is the essential breath (prāṇa) that is required for survival, ‘ū’ indicates Vidārī, who tears apart, (m̐) for Vindu/Bindu or Duḥkhaharaṇa – removal of all misery. Overall, this bīja provides the rock-solid strength of the ebony wood and relieves us of all bad karmic influences acquired over millenia.
- The word “vaṭukāya (वटुकाय)” refers to Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava in the vocative case. Vaṭuka here refers to the blue-throated Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha, a form of Lord Śiva/Rudra who makes fool hardy haste (compassion) in consuming the great poison that threatened the entire Creation during the churning of the great celestial ocean. This ocean is analogous to the ocean of consciousness and the most destructive poisonous substances/forces generated from it are safely contained in the throat of Lord Rudra.
- The word “āpaduddhāraṇāya (आपदुद्धारणाय)” signifies – the one who rescues us from all dangers and miserable conditions.
- The word “kuru kuru (कुरु कुरु)” means “please hurry and execute (the task at hand)”.
- The words vaṭukāya and the bīja (seed) mantra hrīm̐, are repeated to seal the effects of this mantra and to plead Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava to shower His compassion upon us and assure us of His enormous protective power.
Salutations to the highly revered Divine in the form of Śrī Nīlakaṇṭha Mahāvaṭuka Bhairava (form of Lord Śiva Himself) who bestows complete protection from all miseries, disasters, dangers, evil spirits, black magic, diseases, adverse health conditions and bad karma and awakens the inner self within by absorbing all our karma into Himself.
He grants spiritual knowledge and transforms us completely and makes us realize that we are none other than the blemish-less and pure super-consciousness known as Brahman.

guhyādi guhya goptvātvam gṛhaṇāsmat kṛtaṃ japaṃ ।
siddhirbhavatu me deva tvat prasadān mayī sthirā ॥
गुह्यादि गुह्य गोप्त्वात्वम् गृहणास्मत् कृतं जपं ।
सिद्धिर्भवतु मे देव त्वत् प्रसदान् मयी स्थिरा ॥
Meaning: O Lord, you are the most hidden secret of all secrets. May these mantra japa counts performed by me, be offered to you in totality. Our prayers and hope, are that your grace shall remain with us always.

Hello i need a small light of knowledge from you or anyone who knows about this please help,in vatuka bhairava some people add beeja mantra to mula mantra like bam,vam,bhram my question is which is the actual beej of vatuka bhairava from this? i couldnt find bhram as beeja in any scriptures or tantras but they say this is beej mantra of bhairava, but i found bam beeja in ashtottara of vatuka bhairava and in bhairava kavach also, can you say which is the actual beej mantra from these 3 beejas and can we add these beejas in mula mantra?

To the best of knowledge, they are not the bīja mantras of Śrī Vaṭuka Bhairava. Usually, the first letter of the deity's name, is made into a bīja to honor the deity. For all matters related to tantra, the guidance of a guru is essential and I strongly recommend that you choose one.

Vaṭuka is correct. Baṭuka is a disambiguation that is more prevalent. Similar is the case with Valagāmukhī, popularly known as Bagalāmukhī.
