1. Viniyogaḥ (विनियोगः) -

asya śrīrāma tāraka mahāmantrasya

brahma ṛṣiḥ

gāyatrī chandaḥ

śrī rāmo devatāḥ

m̐ bījaṃ

namaḥ śaktiḥ

rāmeti kīlakaṃ

mama śrīrāma prītyarthe śrī-guror-anujñāyā mahāmantra jape viniyogaḥ ॥

अस्य श्रीराम तारक महामन्त्रस्य ।

ब्रह्म ऋषिः ।

गायत्री छन्दः ।

श्री रामो देवताः ।

राँ बीजं ।

नमः शक्तिः ।

रामेति कीलकं ।

मम श्रीराम प्रीत्यर्थे श्रीगुरोरनुज्ञाया महामन्त्र जपे विनियोगः ॥

Meaning - This prayer/mantra japa is to invoke Śrī Rāma Tāraka in our heart, perform mantra japa to obtain His complete grace in all aspects, including the four puruṣārthasdharma (following own nature), artha (wealth), kāma (desires) and mokṣa (liberation) and all desires that one may seek from the Divine. The sage who visually saw this mantra (ṛṣiḥ) is Śrī Brahma. The meter (chandas) for the mantra is Gāyatrī of twenty-four syllables and its variations. The deity is Śrī Rāma, the seed (bījaṃ) is rām̐, the power (śakti) is namaḥ. The key (kīlaka) that binds the mantra is rāma. By the grace and command of our guru and the guru lineage, we pledge to undertake the mantra japa in full earnest.

2. Ṛṣyādi nyāsa (ऋष्यादि न्यास) -

Touch the area of genitals with the right ring finger and thumb joined together.

नमः शक्तये नमः पादयोः  ।

Touch both the feet with the right ring finger and thumb joined together.

namaḥ kīlakāya namaḥ nābhau।

रामेति कीलकाय नमः नाभौ।

Touch the navel with the right ring finger and thumb joined together.

Run both the palms all over the body.

Use both the thumbs and run them on both the ring fingers.

ॐ रौँ तेजसे - कनिष्टिकाभ्यां वौषट् ।

Use both the thumbs and run them on both the little fingers.

om̐ raḥ vīryāya - karatalakarapruṣṭābhyāṃ phaṭ

ॐ रः वीर्याय - करतलकरप्रुष्टाभ्यां फट् ।

Open both the palms; run the opened palms of the right hand on the front and back sides of the left palm and repeat the same for the other palm.

Thus ends the six-part Kara nyāsa.

4. Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsaḥ (षडाङ्गन्यासः) -

Open the right thumb and touch the back of the head. This is the point where there is a tuft of hair.

om̐ raim̐ balāya - kavacāya huṃ

ॐ रैँ बलाय - कवचाय हुं

Cross both the hands and touch both shoulders with the palms.

om̐ raum̐ tejase - netratrayāya vauṣaṭ

ॐ रौँ तेजसे - नेत्रत्रयाय वौषट्

Touch the eyes with the right index and ring fingers, with the middle finger touching the ājña cakra.

o raḥ vīryāya - astrāya phaṭ ।

ॐ रः वीर्याय - अस्त्राय फट्

Open up the left palm and strike it three times with index and middle fingers of the right hand.

7

iti ṣaaṅga nyāsaḥ

इति षडङ्ग न्यासः ॥

Thus ends the six-part Ṣaḍāṅga nyāsa.

bhūr-bhuva-ssuvarom-iti digbandhaḥ

भूर्भुवस्सुवरोम् इति दिग्बन्धः

Meaning: May the directions be charmed and bound, to prevent any external obstacles from the powers residing in the triads – the Earth, atmosphere and the heavens.

6. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -

kālāmbhodhara kānti-kānta-manīṣam vīrāsanādhyāsitam

mudrām jñānamayīm dadhānamaparam hastāmbujam jānuni

sītām pārśvagatām saroruhakarām vidyunnibhām rāghavam

paśyantam makuṭāṅgadādi vividhā kalpojjvalāṅgam bhaje

कालाम्भोधर कान्तिकान्तमनीषम् वीरासनाध्यासितम् ।

मुद्रां ज्ञानमयीम् दधानमपरम् हस्ताम्बुजम् जानुनि ॥

सीताम् पार्श्वगताम् सरोरुहकराम् विद्युन्निभाम् राघवम् ।

पश्यन्तम् मकुटाङ्गदादि विविधा कल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गम् भजे ॥

Meaning: Salutations to the Divine Lord Śrī Rāma possessing a very endearing look with a radiating dark complexion, dazzling crown and adorned with precious ornaments, comfortably seated with a bent knee (vīrāsana). He displays the wisdom granting jñāna mudra and the other lotus like hand is placed on His knee. Seated next to Him, is the Divine Mother Sītā holding a lotus as well. They are surrounded by the entire Rāghava clan radiating their brilliance. Seated below and ready to serve at all times, is Lord Hanumān, in a bent knee posture (vīrāsana).

The jñāna mudra grants the spiritual knowledge and wisdom. The lotus grant both material and spiritual wealth in abundance. Lord Hanumān grants complete unassailable protection from all types of dangers and misfortune and never lets down the sincere devotees. The invincible Rāghava clan drive away all types of negativities and bring immense fortune and auspiciousness to the devotees. The dazzling crown and the ornaments radiate wealth, prosperity and authority in all aspects.

7. Pañcapūjā (पञ्चपूजा) -

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the little fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

ham̐ ākāśātmane puṣpam kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

हँ आकाशात्मने पुष्पम् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the thumbs of both hands with the upper tip of the index fingers.

ya vāyvyātmane dhūpam kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

यँ वाय्व्यात्मने धूपम् कल्पयामि नमः

 

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the index fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

4

ram̐ vahnyātmane dīpam kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

रँ वह्न्यात्मने दीपम् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the middle fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

vam̐ amṛtātmane naivedyam kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

वँ अमृतात्मने नैवेद्यम् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the lower tip of the bottom phalange of the ring fingers of both hands with the upper tip of the thumbs.

6

sam̐ sarvātmane karpūramiśrita tāmbūlādi sarvopacārān kalpayāmi namaḥ ।

सँ सर्वात्मने कर्पूरमिश्रित ताम्बूलादि सर्वोपचारान् कल्पयामि नमः ।

Hold the fingers of each palm in a folded manner with the tips of the fingers of both hands touching each other and the thumbs facing the heart, in a Namaste position.

इति पञ्चपूजा

Thus ends the Pañcapūjā.

8. Utkīlana mantraḥ (उत्कीलन मन्त्रः) –

o aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ klīm̐ rāma mantrasya śāpam mocaya mocaya kīlam nāśaya nāśaya yaina śuddhaṃ siddhaṃ bhavate dhruvam

oṃ aim̐ hrīm̐ śrīm̐ klīm̐ svāhā

ॐ ऐँ ह्रीँ श्रीँ क्लीँ राम मन्त्रस्य शापम् मोचय मोचय कीलम् नाशय नाशय यैन शुद्धं सिद्धं भवते ध्रुवम् ।

ॐ ऐँ ह्रीँ श्रीँ क्लीँ स्वाहा ॥

Recite the Utkīlana mantra 10 times before starting the main mantra japa. The Utkīlana mantra is to negate all curses and obstacles related to the mantra fruition.

9. Mūla Mantraḥ (मूलमन्त्रः) -

  o śrīm̐ hrīm̐ rām̐ rāmāya namaḥ

ॐ श्रीँ ह्रीँ राँ रामाय नमः

The 9 lettered Śrī Rāma mantra should be recited at least 108 times. Initiation is essential.

Meaning -

This is a nine syllabled mantra with some syllables representing bīja (seed) mantras. The parts of the main mantra including the bījas are described below. –

  1. The bīja (seed) mantra om̐ () consists of – ‘au’ => healing and deep cleansing, m̐’ => removes misery. Ushers in auspiciousness.
  2. The bīja (seed) mantra śrīm̐ (श्रीँ) consists of – śa’ indicates Mahālakṣmī, repha ‘ra’ indicates dhana or wealth, ‘ī’ indicates tuṣṭi or satisfaction, m̐’ denotes nāda indicating parā or śakti and vindu indicates duḥkhahara or removal of all miseries.
  3. The bīja (seed) mantra hrīm̐ (ह्रीँ) consists of – ‘h’ => Brahman/śiva, ‘r’ => fire and drive within us, ‘ī’ => energy and the source of all power that helps us ascend, ‘m̐ => removal of all miseries and facilitator of self-realization and ultimate liberation.
  4. The Kāmeśvarī-vāṇaḥ bīja (seed) mantra rām̐ (राँ) represents the five arrows of the Divine Mother Lalita meaning Pañcamī/Vārāhī, who denotes all the pentads such as the five natural elements (Pañca Bhūtas) etc.
  5. The word rāmāya (रामाय) refers to the Divine eminence of Śrī Rāma, the Protector and remover of all negativities.
  6.  The bīja (seed) mantra namaḥ (नमः) refers to our salutations to the Divine and constitutes a bond that is nurtured in our heart.

Salutations to the highly revered Divine in the form of Śrī Rāma, the Lord of the Universe and all elements. May He bestow abundance in all aspects and fulfill all our wishes.

Gāyatrī mantraḥ (गायत्री मन्त्रः)

om̐ śrīm̐ hrīm̐ klīm̐ dāśaradhāya vidmahe

sītāvallabhāya dhīmahi

tanno rāmacandra pracodayāt

ॐ श्रीँ ह्रीँ क्लीँ दाशरधाय विद्महे ।

सीतावल्लभाय धीमहि ।

तन्नो रामचन्द्र प्रचोदयात् ॥

Meaning: May the scion of King Dāśaradha - Lord Rāma, the consort of the Divine Mother Sītā Devī, kindle our intellect and illumine it!

11. Dhyānam (ध्यानम् ) -

13.Samarpaṇam (समर्पणम्) –

guhyādi guhya goptvātvam gṛhaṇāsmat kṛtaṃ japaṃ
siddhirbhavatu me deva tvat prasadān mayī sthirā

गुह्यादि गुह्य गोप्त्वात्वम् गृहणास्मत् कृतं जपं ।

सिद्धिर्भवतु मे देव त्वत् प्रसदान् मयी स्थिरा

Meaning: O Lord, you are the most hidden secret of all secrets. May these mantra japa counts performed by me, be offered to you in totality. Our prayers and hope, are that your grace shall remain with us always.
